Need Processor Recommendation

I am seriously looking to build a new GBPVR serveras I dont believe mine is coping very well.

I dont want to spend that much and believe I can get a new MB, processor, and RAM for around £130.

Question is is this processor any good

The server will run GBPVR only with 2GB ram and SATA HDD in raid 0 config.

Any suggestions would be grateful

I still run my GBPVR-install on an Amd Athlon XP/2000+ with one gig RAM, and it works very well. What do you have currently and what is the problem?

Check out my sig for a PVR spec that works fine from a horsepower perspective (and has done for the last three years or so).

Depends what else you want to do with it of course: if it's just a PVR, this sort of spec will work fine as long as you're not going HD.

I just built a client with a 5200+ and it works well with HD. In fact, with hardware acceleration, it only uses about 25% of the CPU on HD. There are times though that the processer sees 70+% depending on what you are doing. It just depends on your demands and potential uses. Life is going HD, so you should be ready if you can pay for it.

indeed, my pvr manages to comskip, record off multiple tuners, file serve, print serve, and be an actual PVR to my tv as a front end, and its hardly powerful. Id be interested in knowing exactly what yours is doing, because if its just a server they really dont need _that_ much power....

I recently upgraded my gb pvr hardware I went for the following to play hdtv stuff.

e5200+MSI P6NGM-L for £98 (inc vat) with free delivery
and 2GB ram for £11.99
which makes £110. I freely admit it's not a stunning set up but it play all hdtv stuff I throw at it and runs under 50 watts at idle (plug in the wall monitor reading) with rmclock, with 2 hard drives and a dvd writer installed under xp. This is not set up as a server though, I would change the mobo if you want gigabit connection as it only comes with 10/100mb onboard nic.

Not sure I'm the best person to answer that since I haven't tried but I do know that if I wanted to throw more work at my rig, I'd seriously consider upgrading the hardware as I'd like a little more headroom than I have.

That's because my CPU is a notebook-oriented device aimed at minimising power (and so heat) rather than maximising horsepower, as my design philosophy for the PVR was that it's just a PVR, I don't use it for anything else, it sits in the living room in a cabinet that's closed much of the time, and I wanted to work silently and without heat stress in that environment.
