I'll try to get my notes together tonight. Do you have a JP1 remote?

Short description, its a set of 6 jumper pins found on universal remotes that contain UEI technlogy. Radio Shack and One-For-All tend to be UEI based. If you remove the battery cover and look below the battery compartment and you see 6 jumper pins with "JP1" printed beside it. Your good to go. This JP1 interface can be used to do lots of stuff. You can update the codes in your remote, or use your PC to progam your remote, back up your remote config. And lots more. Be advised you need to make a or buy a speical "JP1 Cable" in order for this to work. The JP1 Site has documentiaon on at least two ways to make the cable. Or you can buy a pre-made cable. I made mine. It's $5 or less of small parts. But if you cant solder you might want buy or borrow a cable. So head over to the JP1 group start reading. Some of it can be complicated but don't worry Since I have already decoded the 45 button Hauppagge I can send you a preformated upgrade file. The tools you need are IR.exe and Remote Master. (its a Java based program for remote code writing). If you want to skip the Remote Master I can send you what you will need for the Hauppauge 45button remote. You will need IR.exe and the current RDF files. See the site for more info. That should get you started. I'll have more for you tomorrow. I still have some remote programing to do my self, I'm trying to get my Sony receiver to work on my new One-For-All URC 8910. Check out the One-For-All and Radio Shack remotes. The have some really neat touch screen remotes but I prefer real buttons. Questions let me know. I'll try to describe the rest of the process tomororw.

Thanks, that should keep me off the streets for a few days :-) John

I run ALL of my devices... dvd, mediamvp, tv, stereo, vcr, etc. All through my Logitech Harmony... It has the mediamvp buttons available to it as well. It's fantastic!

I think I have a much eaiser solution for you. I was re-reading the posts on this thread and noticed your system cofig. If you have a USBUIRT and a Girder licence you have everthing you already need to use a Universal remote. You should be able to get Girder to recognize any ir signal you want to use. Grab any remote and just map the buttons to girder events. If you want to skip girder and use a Hauppauge PVR ir receiver (doesn't look like your using one right now) the method I started to describe would be a way to do it. But with a USBUIRT, I'm pretty sure you can map any button function to any event. A_brass

I was able to get two universal remotes to work with the MCE 2004 receiver. One was an RCA u-remote I bought a long time ago at Wal-mart and the other was a PDA with remote control software installed. I eventually went back to the Windows MCE remote because it was more comfortable and had all the buttons labeled correctly which is easier for me and my wife to know which button does what... instead of button "Option 1" is the "TV Guide", etc.
Girder is really nice for changing what a button does... for example, I don't use the 4 color buttons for the GB functions, so I programmed them for some other stuff.

That's probably true. That's the method I've been planning to use for my PDA-based remote as soon as I can figure out all the nuances of that approach. I was looking for a 'quick-and-dirty' approach to get it going to so I could put GB-PVR into service, my wife and kids have been bugging me about getting it going so they can "record the entire world" :-)
Yesterday I tried a MCE 2005 remote and it didn't work well at all. I still don't know why but it just didn't. I was hoping for a plug-and-play solution but haven't found one yet. The "plan" is for a context-sensitive remote i.e. when you select "Live TV" the buttons change to those that are active in Live TV, etc. I've got a whole box full of IR remotes from various TVs, VCRs, etc., over the years so 'programming' the PDA/Girder combination will probably be the best bet in the end. I'm not sure if this would work for you but you could go the JP1 route with a Kameleon remote from One-for-All or Radio Shack. Its a touch screen remote that removes unused buttons from the screen. I'm not sure it would suite your needs but it might. check it out : http://www.ofausa.com/remote.php?type=URC%209960 Are you still interested in the method I used to reprogram my universial remote?
