DVB-S support

Hi @all,
currently I´m using GBPVR with a PVR350 and all works fine.

As I will move house in the end of 2005 I have the problem that in the new house there´s no cable-TV.
So I´m forced to use digital SAT.

I read that GB-PVR supports cards with BDA driver support.

Now there came up some questions :

- which card is the best ? I´m very content with Hauppauge, so my favourite is the NOVA-S.

- are there any plans to support also the NEXUS from Hauppauge ?

- does GBPVR use the EPG transmitted in the DVB-S stream ?

- If not : How is it possible to get the EPG out of the satellite data ? Maybe by using some tools or something like that to get an XML file for GBPVR. The tools I found for doing this task only work with Premium-Cards, and they have no BDA support AFAIK....

I am using the twinham pci sat ci card. I think this is a more versatile card as it will give you a choice of subscribing to paid for channels. It also has stab and disec motor control in case you want to use a motorised dish.

I couldnt tell you which is best, because BDA support still relatively new and I havn't exposure to that many devices yet. That said, much of my development was done with the Hauppauge NOVA-S, so it should be a reasonable choice.

This is not really up to me. It'll work if Hauppauge release BDA drivers, but I suspect they're not going to.

No. The general consensus was that this EPG data is not good enough to rely on consistantly around the world. You need an external feed of EPG data like XMLTV.

How is it possible to get the EPG out of the satellite data ?

I dont know. There may be utilities out there to do this. Most GB-PVR users use XMLTV grabbers that get this information from the broadcasters website.

you can grab epg data off sats with the nova -s and other dvb hardware . with tsreaderlite (coolstf.com).. it works reasonably okay sometimes there is currupted data that gb-pvr can not handle.. but I can download 4- 9 days of epg data for 1500 channels in a few seconds , sometimes I might have to do it several times before I get a working one for gb-pvr , and if your using nexus you could try the program bsepg it should download the epg data for you using sat too in a few seconds..

mind you I do not use a bda drivers, I use dvb "thin client" and configured gb-pvr to run it.. but tsreader does have bda support. but I am not certian if it will download epg via bda... give it a try

I have bought same card as you have but I have not yet installed it. Is there anything you can share that would be useful for me to get it working with GB-PVR, so I don't need to reinvent the wheel?

I had quite a lot of fun trying to get this to work. However, I discovered that GB-PVR defaults to the following settings for the LNB when choosing the twinhan DVB-S under BDA recording plugins settings
LNB LOF1 = 11300
LNB Switch = 11300
LNB LOF2 = 11300

I found that the above settings caused me grief and I was getting no pictures at all. I then borrowed the seetings from the twinham television software and these are now my settings
LNB LOF1 = 10600
LNB Switch = 10714
LNB LOF2 = 9750

Immediately, I got all television and radio channels. Though some still have no picture, I will keep you updated.

The twinham visionDTV/twinhamDTV require BDA drivers. I tried those from their site, without much luck. However, you can download bda drivers from the link below

Currently, I am very pleased with GB-PVR. I hope SUB will keep om improving it.

IMPORTANT: Please do not install the twinhan drivers and application. They seem to unregister the microsoft multiplexer. The drivers that are also installed are not compatible with GB-PVR. Rather, only install the bda drivers from the link above and your setup will work with GB-PVR.

not sure what part of the world your from.. so I do not know what type of lnb you would be using..
but a general break down in NA is this
NA ku
circular: 11250 ( twinhan say it 11300 but it off by 50) standard set would be 9750- 11700- 11250 ,
linear; 10750 standard set would be 10750- 11700- 10750.. but I use a twinhan in NA and for alot of linear sats this one works better 9750-11700-10750.

but you could have a universal LNB if 10600 works . check what type of lnb you have. what would be the setting for your provider sat. if your uncertian ask at dvbn.net they tell you the proper lnb settings for your area.. or check your local sat forums..
if you still can not figure out then phone your local sat guy and ask what are the proper lnb setting for the type of lnb you have..

because to me your setting are backwards. normal I would see them this way 9750-11700-10600--- but really I am only very familair with NA settings

I have a universal LNB. I will try the settings you suggest. Firefox_i, I suggest you also use the settings suggested by Sash.
