was just wondering if anyone has used a screen recorder before (app to record your screen and save it as a video file).

i found camstudio, but on a 1920x1080 display i only get about 10fps, which doesnt look all that good. was hoping for something more around the 25fps mark.

anyone have any suggestions?

From that list, only Jing appears to do video, and only in flash.

@OP, I'm afraid all I've used is camstudio and fraps--and fraps only works for apps/games that have a full screen mode (as far as I can tell), it won't capture windowed or desktop activity.

I know there is at least one commercial app designed specifically for video capture, but I can't recall it's name.

On the PCH forum today I found that vlc lets you do this. Here's a link to the vlc syntax

http://www.nerdlogger.com/2008/01/stream...op-as.html

With this I could view my desktop on the PCH and I tested and I could also save the stream using wget. You can probably even save directly to a file. I was surprised being able to capture PVRX2 playing SD analog and stream it with not too much stutter, so the capture to file could be pretty good.

Heres a 23MB sample download http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ANRYZDVM with some video playing or to see what 1680x1050 looks like on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VB9N1pHUnk (res to low)

Video-Recording-With-VLC

Googling your suggestion, I found those instructions (scroll inside the scribd area). Haven't tried it, but it looks promising. And surprising too. Thanks mvall

If vlc doesn't work for you, you might try Wink. It's a great free utility that I've used a number of times for how-to videos. Lots of output options too.

alas, i just tried vlc and the quality isnt very good, the frame rate is far too slow. im trying to record a demo of the "videos" plugin im writing in action and post it on youtube (so want to show off the animations etc, which happen with a second)

You could also look at fraps . I have used the free version in the past and if you can live with a watermark and a 30 second demo it might do what you want.
