Tuner Install Advice

I never had much need for more than one tuner but i find myself looking to do that now.

I have a WinTV PVR USB2 installed and working fine, has been for years. I also have a HVR 1950 sitting here that I want to install. Won't the two interfere with one another? the USB2 is using WinTV version 4.11 and the HVR 1950 seems to come with WinTV 6+.

Do I un-install everything first? do I just get rid of the older version? Let them both install?

I didn't even get to the GBpvr setup and I'm already confused. This is gonna get ugly, I can see it now.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

I am not familiar with the WinTV PVR USB2 but i have 3 hauppage tuners installed, HVR 1600 HVR, 950Q, HVR 2250. I didnt bother to install Wintv but you can leave it installed.

each time i added a card installed into the computer, your is usb so should be too difficult, then when windows wanted to install drivers i just pointed it to the cd and installed the drivers for the card.

Now install GBPVR, make sure you install the required elements first ie Microsoft runtime, and .net 2.0

once installed you will need to configure each tuner for what you want (digital or analog), and setup an EPG.

Thanks for that, I didn't realize that all I really needed were the drivers for the card and not winTV and associated junk on the disk.

I see from your sig that you use a PCH, my next step is to replace my MVP's. Have they proven to be a good, hopefully better, replacement for the MVP's?

I cant comment of the MVP as i have never used one, and went straight to the PCH. But from what i have read in the forum it seems to be well like by people who have experienced both, and with the lastest work from martin it is pretty much as functional.

I have been using MVP's for a number of years using the included dongle for about a year & then the mvpmc dongle for the last couple, recently I got an EGreat M34a NMT so I could play back .ts recordings reliably & skip adverts etc. (this had proven difficult/impossible for me to archive with the old MVP's) & therefore being able to use the new multi record feature that sub included recently in GB-PVR.

I have been totally blown away with how well it works compared to the MVP's, I always thought the MVP gave a good picture until I saw what the NMT delivers, it is stunning even on analog recording off my old PVR500, menu response is instant just like you were using the PC to view on & everything I have tried so far works as well if not better (much better) than it did on the MVP's. Just to add the icing to the cake with Martin releasing his updated licrd file last week allowing my old Hauppauge remote from the MVP to work with it properly was totally brilliant I have only found two downsides over the MVP so far one being it plays .ogg music files using the native NMT player therefore there is a delay between tracks the second is it doesn't automatically load into GB on powerup & you have to navigate through the menus to load it. (I believe it can load automatically if you have a HDD in the NMT but that isn't something that I want or is practical with the M34a).

I am totally happy with my upgrade, I now have a HD compatible, small footprint, totally silent, super fast, almost PnP client that only cost USA$159 + shipping (NZ$350 including shipping) (I couldn't even get close to building a silent WAF HD client PC (not to mention that small) for anywhere near that price) that does everything that I have asked it to do....the only problem is now I "want" another two or three of them

Wow, that's quite the recommendation. I will need several as I'm down to 3 MVP's from 5 when the kids were still in the house. If they are as good as you say I may be able to drop to two of them. I never did use GBPVR for watching live TV, mostly for audio and watching recordings. Once in a while I'd use live TV for out on the deck but that was rare.

They sound to me like they will make terrific MVP replacements.

I've thrown together a quick hack to play .ogg and FLAC transcoded like the default behaviour with the MVP. I had thought I'd write my own own decoding code like I did in mvpmc, but I just haven't been too motivated. It will make a better fall project I think.
