In the XRecord skin.xml you can change the text styles in the TextStyles section. If you go into notepad.exe and look at the list of available fonts on your system you should be able to tell XRecord to use the font typeface, size and style that looks good on your system. For example here's how to change the ButtonText.
Code:
<TextStyle name="ButtonText" color="White" typeFace="Brush Script MT" size="18" style="italic"/>

Ok, tried it. Did it work? well yes and no.

it brought it to the realm of readable but it still is quite bad text.

If the skin.xml file holds all the text/skin information for xrecord. could you send me your skin.xml file. It looks rather nice and is a least readable.

Those screenshots are from dshoup. I use the default blue skin that comes with XRecord. Maybe he'll see your post or you can PM him and ask him for the skin.

I've been lurking while you and fla have been working this out...I guess it's time to step up to the plate. I don't know if this will work for you or not, but here is my skin file (actually 2 of them). My concern is that I use WinXP and you mentioned you were on Win 2000...I don't know if the share the same fonts or not.

I'm actually uploading 2 skins. One is the version that produced the screen shot here (using community skin 3, it is the file called CS3 skin.xml). It is using Arial as the font style. The second is a community skin 4 widescreen skin (WS HD skin.xml). You will notice it does not specify any fonts...I am not sure about this, but I assume it is using a default font from the base skin...some fonts in that file are Arial, some are Verdana in case that helps. I seem to remember dealing with this when I first went to the CS4 version and I think I changed the one font to Arial in the base skin...but I don't remember for sure.

Good luck with it...I hope the skins help!

Just to make it visual, here's how bad the fonts can look on Win2000 (image from isgdre).

WOW!!! I can't believe it. I can actualy read what it says. Not quite as nice as the regulare "TV Guide" but 90% there at least at WAY GOOD ENOUGH!!!

EXCELENT! Thanks!!!

But...... with one giant step forward comes a step back.

This is what I did.

I downloaded and installed comunity skin 4.02 WS and then downloaded and used the skin provided here. POOFF can see it.
But When I select one of the menu items (say "Pending") and then click on one of the shows, XRecord crashes. and dumps me back to the GB-PVR main menu Sad

I don't exacly know were to look for whts going on but I'll attach two log files that seem to change and there seems to be an error message in them.

Yes, this has made the entire xrecord plugin useless but I remember from a long time ago there was a problem that was simply a missing background.jpg file and when we replaced it, it all started working. So I'm hopping we are close.

Thanks again.

Oops guess I should zip the files before I attach them.

You might try reinstalling the CS4 and using the default skins for Xrecord instead of the one I uploaded. You can manually edit fonts as needed. It is possible the skin I uploaded has some lines that make it incompatible with your base skin. I wish I could remember all the changes I made so I could help you try and see, but this would be a good way to test for this. You can always rename the skin.xml files to save them for backup purposes (it will only read the version actually called "skin.xml" so you can have a backup in the same directory with a name like skin-backup.xml).

Good job. So now we know it's a skin issue. The error in the log:

C:\Program Files\Devnz\GBPVR\skin\Community-WS\xrecord\..\..\..\Skin2\Community-WS\_CoreImages\Detail_Selected.png

indicates you probably inserted an old skin file into a new community skin and it's trying to access an image that no longer exists in the new CS in that location.

If you can find the original version of the file you are using we can compare and see what was changed to fix the XRecord fonts.

Once we figure out what the change is, maybe we can fix it in the official XRecord blue font. I'm sure Fatman_do would like to fix the CS's XRecord skin too.

The blocky XRecord font problem has been floating around for ages, you're the first one to get this close to posting a solution. Don't give up!

Edit: Oh and 90% is the best we can do given XRecord is a legacy gbpvr plugin and PVRX2 renders it differently than native PVRX2 plugins.

I actually have found a discrepency between the WS and SD versions in CS 4.0.2, so Look for 4.0.3 for the WS version in about a week. Can never seem to have time to do this as much as I would like. Not that it would fix anything magically. I have not noticed such bad font displays myself, so I don't know. I am not doing anything special with the CS skins really, in regards to fonts.
