Other than BT there is usenet.

I sometime cart my PCH with me on the road and it's handy having some stuff to watch when away form home. But a stick would probably cover it if I hadn't had an old laptop drive sat doing nothing to fit inside.

If you have your server going to sleep, where is your WOL program going to live when the share disappears? (but a stick would fix this as well).

I've got a 500GB in and it's pretty empty. I'm thinking of taking it out as it definitely gets hot in there.
I recently got a 16gb flash drive dirt cheap and basically never looked back. Plus, an external drive (assuming I had enough space) might be better for most folks.

I've got an old Mediagate MGS35 that I do the same thing with...bit smaller than a PCH and a bit more expendible if it were to take some damage travelling.

Server is up all the time at the moment mainly because I gave up on trying to get it to wake up cleanly when I first entered GBPVR world, something I've been meaning to revisit so I'll bear that in mind.

Regarding the USB stick/flash drive, I take it from both your posts that everything I can do on an internal drive could be done on a stick all be it size limited, but the PCH treats them the same?

Sorry for the noob questions!

In a word - NO. A USB drive/stick is used for storage.
The internal drive is a "system" drive and has a separate partition on it that has the NMT applications. I don't know if you even get to see the applications on an NMT without a drive???
