ION 330 CUDA x264 HD Movies and EVR - Overlay 100% CPU

Hi All,

Spent the whole afternoon trying to get x264 movies running on GB-PVR 1.4.7 on a ION 330 mini-itx board with some issues.

Poor little CPU's cant keep up

With VMR9 selected I cannot get CUDA acceleration to work it hits CPU 100%, I can get CUDA to work perfect with Classic Media player using the CoreAVC codecs around 13% CPU all GPU, even choosing coreavc in GB-PVR does not help it still using FFDSHOW but will not work because there is no support for cuda.

With EVR i can get the x264 playing nice and smooth 24fps but when the overlay comes up (menu/info,etc....) CPU hits 100% and slows the movie down very annoying?

Any advise?

Its worth noting that the GB-PVR decoder settings only apply when you play a file type that GB-PVR records (.ts/.mpg/.dvr-ms). Any other file types just let directshow choose the decoders. If its always using ffdshow decoders and you dont want it to, you'll probably need to remove ffdshow, or configure the ffdshow settings so its not used in pvrx2.exe, or increase the merit of the CoreAVC decoder so that its picked instead of ffdshow.

Did you tryed SAF?

easier way for ffdshow to not play h.264 is deselect h.264 in the codecs tab...
[set to 'disabled']
that way you can still use it for other stuff...[mainly mpeg2/divx]

You didn't mention your O/S which I think it the biggest factor with the ION, but if you are using XP admit defeat.

Why not in XP? CoreAVC with Cuda works in XP or Vista - only the renderers that can be used differ. is meant to work very well on the ION Nvidia 9400
I agree that the OP should just set H264 to disabled in the ffdhsow video codec configuration - oh and in CoreAVC config select 'preferred decoder'.

I tried EVR in Windows 7 and I got the same issue when menus were overlayed - CPU use rockets up and video started to stall - and that was with PowerDVD codecs with full DXVA acceleration...

Pob are you talk about your experience with the ION? I first installed mine with XP because I had an XP license and it was a bad experience. Granted I am a media extender kinda guy and I don't like to spend a lot of time tweaking codecs etc but I didn't get it to work

When I installed Win 7, it was a totally different experience. 7mc was great with almost everything playing after I installed the Haali splitter GBPVR testing with 1.4.7 was good too, but I needed AC3filter. I didn't actually check CPU usage with the OSD showing (I will next time it is running) because whatever it was, the playback wasn't impacted. I see the ION as only being a client so if it is 100% I wouldn't mind.

As for EVR I personally don't think you can compare the XP implementation with the Vista or Windows 7 flavours. I don't think they are are the same.

Finally I don't think vendors care too much about creating quality drivers for the home XP users. Why should they it is a declining market, they want new customers who want to buy new models with DX10 or DX11 features.

These are my opinions and I am glad your experience is different.

I have but only with Mediaportal, might try SAF if I dont get anywhere with forcing coreavc.

Yeah did that, as I can get Media Classic player to work fine with H264 content because it is using coreavc as I deselect h264 in FFDSHOW. But still GB-PVR uses FFDSHOW.
