i was wondering if someone who knew about speakers could tell me if this sub (hehe) would be powerful enough for a home theatre

I have a JBL powered 12-inch single sub with a 100 watt RMS amp and it gets plenty loud for me. One concern I would have with subs mounted in a wall would be mechanical coupling. Unless there is some serious damping mechanism in the speaker mounting system, your whole house will become a transducer. :eek: Might be fine in a concrete wall, but in a stick-built house there will be no sleeping while the subs are on.

i was hoping it wouldnt be that bad... the lounge is far away from the bedrooms etc... but i would probably want to put some in the master bedroom as well.... hmmm

havent got the receiver yet, i was just going to look for a 7.2 receiver with 4 hdmis.
the one area of things ive never been an expert at is sound, i know all the inputs i need (basically a receiver with 4 hdmi input and 1 output, that must get the audio from hdmi, my current sony one just passes it through and doesnt use the audio), and the amount of speakers (2 front, 2 side, 2 rear, 1 centre, 2 subs), and have found a place that does ceiling surround speakers and wall speakers for front and centre, just need to get the subs worked out.

ill be using this mostly for watching movies/tv, but also use it for music if we have a party etc, so needs to go loud (well loud enough for music at a party, not an acdc concert)

8 inch you dont get real low bass but more punchy bass so it wouldnt boom as much as bigger speakers
some people prefer this as it sounds more responsive
12 inch is pretty normal

15inch and above if you want to crack your foundations

your preout on your amp wont power a sub you would need to also buy a power or sub amp so factor that into your price also

once you do you might be better off buying a sub/amp in a box
that said you can use any amp to power it (ie your old sony amp)

the main amp will be using its power to power your other 7 speakers

it depends how anal you are about your sound also you can spend a truck load of cash for very little gain if you ask me

88db is a little low for my liking but it will work.

With in-wall subs, you definitely want to use some type of "back box". It's an encloser that fits between the studs into which you mount the sub. It will minimize vibrations to the rest of the house. You can build your own back box and add a little insulation between the studs and the sides of the box. A good thick laminate floor underlayment works well. I would also line the inside of the box with the underlayment to further reduce transient vibrations. Using Polyfill in the box will also help as well as tighten the bass.

Also, an 8" sub has a surface area just under half that of a 12". So two 8" subs (100 sq. in.) will move almost as much air as a 12" (113 sq. in.). Two 10" (156 sq. in. total) will move over 50% more air than a single 12".

The added benefit of using two speakers is that you can run a more powerful amp. Running an amp that is 200 WRMS @ 4 Ohms into two 8 ohm speakers (wired in parallel) results in halfing the power that goes through each speaker (so you get 200 W total by sending 100 W through each speaker. Using 4 speakers in a parallel/series combination, you can create an 8 ohm load if needed. http://www.bcae1.com/spkrmlti.htm is a good overview of this process.

With a response of 35hz - 2khz, that's just a woofer, not a sub-woofer. 10hz - 200hz, that's a sub-woofer. I think the method with that type of speaker is to use lots of them around the room. With a true sub, only one is usually needed.

Proficient Audio makes a nice in-wall 10" but it's more expensive. They also make a back box for it. I can't link to it directly on their site (all Flash based) but you can go to http://www.proficientaudio.com/main.html and click on "Cinema" then "in-wall subs". Proficient Audio is basically the cheaper line for SpeakerCraft. I have their (all in-wall) 8" for mains, 6.5" surrounds and dual 5.25" center. I absolutely love them.

Of course, you may find it cheaper elsewhere.
