I had a thought the other day (yeah gave me a headache etc etc Wink) about media art. I have GBPVR configured to post-process (via the .bat file) downlaods of media art using ProgrammeImageTool and WizImageGrabber (kudos to both those authors).

Over the years I have built up quite a few show images which Xrecord uses for show displays (stored in devnz/GBPVR/media/art).

Does anyone else think, if it is legal, a GBPVR repository of these images would be a good idea (so we don't hit the imdb or other servers first). I don't have server space, but am willing to upload the images and maybe someone could write a plugin to do so on a regular automatic basis?

I like the idea and wouldn't mind have XRecord look there first for poster download but I guess WizImageGrabber would look there anyways. There's always people offering hosting space to sub for gbpvr so I guess the space could be found from a generous user. Stability is not as crucial for poster download as for gbpvr hosting.

The legality question is a good one but I know nothing about legal issues...

I'm not 100% certain, but I think that would be more in the illegal section of things. If the images were scraped from a website, for example imdb, then the images would be owned and distributing them would be illegal.

however, I think a better idea would be for someone to build a scraper plugin into gbpvr using legal sources (ie. thetvdb.com). I believe xbmc has opened up their scraping library for other projects to use, which already uses thetvdb.com, imdb, and many other sites for it's information. I think using those libraries would be the best bet. just my 2¢

theres already a good scraper library in the gbpvr library which supports themoviedb.org and thetvdb.com. it also has imdb supported. and is completely configured through a xml file so can be automatically updated and downloaded when/if a change is required.

thats the problem with gbpvr, lots of duplicate code/functions, and hardly anyone sharing. the wiz library seems to be used for some things, but how many different implementations of media scrapping are out there now?

i tried with the gbpvrlibrary, but no one really seemed interested so i gave up.

Since gbpvr is a closed source project, the philosophy trickles down into plugin land. Open source involves compromise and it's understandable that many plugin developers who do this as a hobby have limited interest in compromise.
