Sorry, total noob here. I am trying to get my computer to work as a dvr, and have been looking into getting a remote for the computer.

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 150 card, but the one that came without the remote. I am currently running windows xp pro, SP3. I need a remote that will work with gbpvr, and at the same time control the set top box from direct tv. I have looked on ebay and have found mce remotes that come with a remote, receiver and blaster.

my question is, i don't have windows xp mce 2005 installed. Can i use this remote without having mce installed? Can i get it configured to run with gbpvr?

Thanks guys

sure, it's all i use...Smile make sure it has blasters, 2 if possible..
just plug it in and look at device manager to see if driver installed automatically..[usually does]
you can use the driver from mce or there's an alternate driver available..but best to use built-in ms one..

and to customize buttons, check here..http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=3...ostcount=8
run that reg file and do instructions on that page to get it working without any other software..

info on the specific model would help, as some are not real mce remotes, just compatible..

Short answer is "yes". When you plug the "beanbag" into the USB port, XP will recognize it and install the required drivers.

Yes. GBPVR contains built-in support for both receiving and blasting with the MCE IR hardware. The tough part is fumbling around to get it working as the wiki does not have a walk-through with screenshots. For blasting, once you select "MCE IR Blaster Plugin" at the configuration point shown at http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Confi...nelChanger , click on the settings button and follow the procedure for learning your set top box codes from the STB remote. For controlling GBPVR istelf, see http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Config/DVD . In the DVD tab of GBPVR config, select the MCE remote in the "Remote Control Type" drop-down.

MCE remotes will work with XP Pro. Be careful though to not buy a remote that is only supported on Vista / 7 (in this case XP will not be able to find any driver) or a remote that is not a real MCE remote (if it comes with blaster emitters then it's a MCE remote, look for OEM remotes like HP ones)

To customize fully the remote to control GBPVR and other software, as well as using the IR blaster you'll need a third party software : HIP / Eventghost / Grider or my software LM Remote KeyMap : choose the one that fit your needs in term of simplicity of installation / use.

Regards,
Stéphane.

DirectTV can be a problem depending on which set top box they issued to you. See here for more info http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=3...ostcount=5

I am just getting into gbpvr myself, and I'm in a similar situation (XP Pro Sp3) and looking into getting an MCE remote.

I had been scanning ebay and trying to match up the pictures from the wiki (http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Hardware/MCERemotes) with actual remote units to no avail. The buttons and/or button positions seem to be different in all cases, so I wasn't sure about compatibility.
Looks more like the 2004 picture than 2005..
Again not quite the same as the 2004/5

Thats exactly along the lines of what I need to know, thanks!
However... would something like this OEM-HP-MCE-KIT(ebay link again, apologies) match what you meant by "OEM HP"?

Yes, this is exactly an OEM HP Remote.

Stéphane.
