How does GBPVR hand the mpeg stream to the MVP? Is it a pure muxed stream read from disk, or does it first get demuxed through dshow filters and the individual streams sent?

I've got some files that show up with no duration information, and I'm trying to figure out why.

They're mpeg1 files with vcd encoding/muxing, so I expected them to just work.

None of my mpeg2 files have this problem.

No it doesnt use any filters. It just reads and passes bits of the mpeg file directly to the MVP.

That's what I assumed, but figured I'd ask.

Hmm, that suggests there's something about the muxing of the file that it doesn't like. grrr

Think I've figured it out. The MVP appears to be fussy about the IBP structure of the GOP, at least for mpeg1.

Files encoded with tmpgenc's VCD template play file. Files encoded with Canopus's VCD template *play* fine, they just appear to be 1 second long on the timeline, so no FF/RW/Seek. I was having DSM flashbacks.

I tweaked the Canopus profile to match tmpgenc's GOP structure and they appear to work.

Could you pass on the Canopus info since I use Procoder and am having similar problems?

Thanks

Unfortunately, it didn't work reliably. It worked for some, but not others.

It's unfortunate too, since Canopus seems to be the only encoder that handles various conversions (framerate, aspect) without tinkering.

I'm trying the SVCD profile now, hoping that works...

So far, it seems like the MVP's mpeg1 handling is spotty. I've got mpeg1 files I've downloaded as 2 cd sets, so they presumably used the same encoder for both discs. One will play with proper time info, the other won't.

I went through most of my mpeg1 stuff, and about 90% of them won't recognize the time properly. Even stuff encoded with MainConcept isn't recognized properly, and that's what Hauppauge uses to transcode avi.

What seems to work so far, is to create a Canopus hybrid profile. I took the VCD profile, and changed it to use Generic ISO MPEG Stream, and MPEG2 Program Stream. Width, height, bitrate etc are all set to VCD values. I also check Put Sequence Header on each GOP.

So far, this seems to reliably create "VCD" files the MVP likes. Probably not an option if you want to burn them to an actual VCD later. For my purposes, I just use it as a view then delete format, so I don't care if I can't put it to plastic properly.

No.

This would mean decoding in software on the PC, then putting the decoded video through these filters, then re-encoding it to MPEG2. Just like AVI support, this would mean losing the ability to FF/RW/Resume, and would require a 2.5GHz+ machine and would use 100% of the CPU during the transcode.
