Whats the general concensus for best GBPVR OS?

It's been a couple years, but if I recall correctly the problem was adjusting the overscan - I just couldn't adjust the screen size in Vista.

Probably not a Vista problem per se, it was probably a problem with the Nvidea driver (I tried a bunch of them and none worked right under Vista for the SVHS output) but if there's no driver that works under Vista then Vista isn't much good to ya for that particular board.

These comments have inspired me to make the switch from XP to W7. Since it means reformatting the drive, I think I'll wait until the next version of GB-PVR is released. Any ideas about how long that wait will be?

the dxva1 shim works better in 7 than XP's even, which was xp's strong suit..
and you gain dxva2 ability..
so all the acceleration available in xp is equally available in 7...using same codecs..
and a tiny bit more efficient...

hmm.. are you saying that Windows 7 allows HW acceleration of H.264 video on VMR9? :eek:

Vista sure doesn't (the DXVA translation works for MPEG2 but not H.264).. and I can't get decent tear-free playback on XP without FSE, which means I can't use custom tasks (i.e. Hulu desktop)..

ahh, the agony... but if you're right, then VMR9 and Windows 7 would be the perfect match.

oh, i meant vmr9 fse mode...which is all i use...
i can't seem to get vmr plain to be smooth no matter what i do...or OS..
it's close but always jitters...fse looks great..
but this is on mpeg2, h264 always looked good if it was accelerated...

in xp, my ati card lets me do stuff on other screen while pvrx2 is up in fse..
can't you just have a batch to kill pvrx2 and run Hulu, and then run pvrx2 again after as a custom task?

i know it's not ideal but it would get you both..

i'm running mpc-hc video decoder and ffdshow dxva decoder and cyberlink pdvd7 fine in win7 and they perform exactly like in xp..
cyberlink still most stable and ffdshow's is coming up on it's heals, being nearly as stable and full featured..

the only dxva2 decoder i'm aware of is Microsoft's...which i find kinda odd..

heres my batch file for power dvd just make sure you put it in the gbpvr folder for best results change power dvd to what ever then run another batch file doing the opposite to start gbpvr

are you using VMR9 / FSE, or are you running EVR? if you're using VMR9 or FSE, are you sure that DXVA is being used for h.264? (whats your cpu usage for h.264 videos)

h.264 cpu usage is extremely low [well under 10%] except with cyberlink which is about 10-15%..
easiest way to check is with dxva checker...it also provides a lot of extra info about the codecs and modes..and since you can play files in all the modes, you can compare...playback seems same as you will get in gbpvr in the various modes..so provides good feedback on what works and what just doesn't..

oh and it's "nicer" to send pvrx2 a alt-F4 to 'ask' it to close instead of forcing it..sometimes that could lead to data loss...
terminating it might halt a sqlite query midstream or something else..
taskkill /im pvrx2.exe should close it nicely without 'forcing' it...
/f is only for stuck apps...

excellent, sounds like DXVA translation for H.264 is working for you in Windows 7; maybe you've found the HTPC holy grail.

I've got a spare Win7 license to burn; I'll have to try it out!
