Sub, I'm sure you are busy so I don't want to distract you from your tasks at hand.
I rarely watch live TV so there is no rush on this:
I am using an HDHR, (only one tuner configured as ATSC)
I select a program from the guide and it plays for around 10 seconds and then begins to loop until it crashes with the error "unable to communicate with recording service." Or if it does not crash, exiting the stream and attempting to watch another channel results in the same error.

I'm not sure its the cause of your problem, but its complaining about Direct3D not being available on your machine:

No, it'd only effect playback on the PC.

Those logs were created using RDP to the "server" but the looping occurs even on the NMT.
It is a server board so the graphics are weak, but since it doesn't have a display attached I don't think that matters (please inform me if it does.)
I am able to watch live TV via VLC over RDP for testing without problems.
One thing that may not be conventional is that the HDHR is connected directly to the second NIC with no IP config configured (UDP is all thats required) and is thus not on the subnet that the NMT's are on.

It'll just be RDP generating the Direct3D error messages then, and can probably be ignored.

Reproduce the problem on the NMT and post the logs and I'll take a look. The mvp.log you included didnt seem to show this problem.

Looping on livetv is a known problem with the NMT in the initial release which identified when the --em-npvr version was uploaded. Sub has provided me with a test version that does fix this. I suspect that the crash is related to how mvpmcx2 responds to the loop condition as I would see if from time to time.

yes but it also occurs without NMT, just watching via RDP.
