I probably should have mentioned this in the long UI design wishlist thread a couple of months ago, but I didn't think about it until now....
Why do recordings and video library get a completely separate menu item? Can't they be integrated together? What is so fundamentally different about a TV show or movie that's been recorded locally vs. a TV show or movie that came from somewhere else that they need such disparate treatment? Why can't a movie for the kids I just bought and ripped show up in What's New? It's new isn't it?
(yes, I know the technical difference is that recordings are in the database while video library items are just files... but why does the user have to be bothered with that?)
Complete integration may be a tall order straight off, but at the very least it should be simple enough to have the defined Video Library paths show up as additional menu pages in Recordings (ie, flip between What's New, Ready, Video Library path 1, Video Library path 2, Pending, Conflicts, etc.). That keeps the whole 'playing of files containing video' function in one place.
While I'm ranting, I've also never really liked the What's New list. I'd prefer just one list of recordings that's sorted by recording date, and grouped by program as well (ie, essentially the Ready list sorted by date rather than alpha). Therefore the top of the Recordings list is What's New by definition, but you don't have to go to a whole different list to see what isn't quite as new, or to see what other episodes you may have missed before the new one that just recorded. You should be able to push a button and change the sort order to alpha as well.
For a usage example of the last bit: I record Who Wants to be a Millionaire so I can laugh at the idiot who doesn't know some basic bit of science or tech knowledge for the $2000 question. I like to watch them in order. So I sit down and see a new Millionaire in the What's new list... but is it the only one or are there some others recorded? Some days I have 20+ shows recorded, so to scroll back through the What's New list looking for more of one show can be a lot of shows to look through. So I switch to the ready list, page all way down to W and watch whatever Millionaires are there. Now I'm done with those, what else is new? I'm in the wrong list, go back to What's New, see some other daily show is new, but again I like to watch them in order, so it's back to Ready, find that show, and so on.... Why can't it all be in one list?
Sorry, that was a wordy rant... it's late, I'm tired, and had a couple shots of this weird homemade blueberry vodka a business associate gave me...
