Hi guys,

Sorry I don't seem to be able to use the forum search to find DVB-S2 threads.

I was wondering can anyone advise a DVB-S2 card that will work reliably with GBPVR / NPVR?

I know sub recommends the Hauppauge Nova-S2, but there are good deals to be had on the TechniSat SkyStar S2.

All advice is much appreciated.

Thanks Smile

Sorry, but at this stage DVB-S2 only works on Hauppauge cards. .

I've just RA'd my second Nova S USB2. Hauppauge Uk forum indicates a problem with the power supply in some instances and an upgraded PSU is available so would pay to check that you get the upgrade if you get one of these.

Hi sub,

Thanks for the info. May hold out for a deal on a Nova-S2 then. Only want it for BBC HD, so I'm trying hard to justify £80 for one channel! Big Grin

You don't need a DVB-S2 card for BBC HD, nor any of the Freesat HD channels in fact. A bog standard DVB-S card will pick them all up fine (for now).

Yup, none of the free HD channels are in S2 (on Sky/freesat). The only one may be ch4 if/when it becomes FTA.
There again, the existing free ones will possibly/probably move to S2 at some time????

The impending launch of BBC One HD seems as good a time as any for them to do it, but I'm not even sure if it has a definite launch date yet, never mind what the technical details might be.

While we're on the topic, why is DVB-S2 only supported on Hauppauge cards? Does the BDA driver architecture work differently for each of the -T, -C, etc tuner types? I'm not criticising, I'm just interested...

The BDA spec didnt describe how some aspects of DVB-S2 work, so each manufacturer came up with their own proprietary mechanisms for specifying extra S2 settings (like rolloff and pilot etc). The only S2 devices I've got are Hauppauge ones, so these are the only ones I've ever been able to add support for.
