Sub,

I get a situation around 1-2 times per week where the recording service will become unresponsive. It happened again tonight, causing me to miss my favorite show for the second time in three weeks. I know this is beta software, but this problem is very quickly getting on my bad side. I've posted the logs in previous posts and they don't indicate anything out of the ordinary. They just stop at some point. The recording service is still running but it's hung. The web interface is unreachable, and I can start npvr by the start menu shortcut, but the taskbar icon is unresponsive. The nrecord.log just stops after the last "Graph stopping..." message from 2pm today. I'd post my logs, but they don't say anything, they just stop. I've got a HDHR and I've gone through all the settings from the posts that I can find. That has corrected most other problems but hasn't touched this one.

Is there any way I can help troubleshoot this? Or is there more verbose logging that can be turned on to find out where it's stopping or hanging? Anything at all I can do? I'm getting desperate.

Post the logs and I'll take a look.

We've certainly seen a few reports of this in both GBPVR and NPVR, which is odd, because they share no code at all. I've never been able to reproduce it though, so not really sure what its related too. From the logs I'd seen, it looks like the device hangs the process when I ask it to stop.

From what I've seen the device does in fact stop, but the call never comes back. Is there any way you could spawn a new process who's sole purpose is to stop the graph, and if it doesn't come back in 500ms or so just kill the process and assume the graph was stopped? That might not be really elegant, but would make it more likely to fail-safe rather than fail-broken.

Logs are attached. I'm more than willing to try out any ideas you have.

Happened again, logs posted again.... seems to be happening more now that it's getting busier. I've already set it to restart twice a day to try and get less failures. Not sure there's much else I can do. If it keeps locking up every day like this I'm going to have to switch back to GBPVR.

As it always happens recording the same show (Dinosaur Train) on the same channel at the same time, perhaps try getting rid of that recording for now.

My kids would be upset if I did that... Smile

I always get some recordings in the morning (kids shows on PBS), early afternoon (soaps for the wife), and the evening. I've got it set to reboot at 1:30pm (after morning recordings), 5:30pm (after soaps), and 5:30am (after evening recordings). I'm hoping that will free up any failures caused during Dinosaur Train or any other shows.

If it really is that time/channel then - Just a thought - if you still have gbpvr on your system, record it with that and remove it from NPVR ??

It's more than that, unfortunately. It's many different programs on different channels.

We've missed three weeks worth of shows and Sub's too buried right now to dig into it. I've hit the limit of the wife acceptance factor, I'm going to have to switch back to gbpvr until the dust settles on npvr a bit. Too bad, I loved being able to run this in a VM on my homebrew file server and RDP to it.
