MKV files

Hi,

Can't play MKV files, so installed FFDSHOW (from what I read elsewhere), but still no joy. Is there anything else I need to do to get working?

You need an MKV source filter like Haali or the one from the MPC-HC standalones.

Since the title of this post is MKV files, I have a problem I want to mention. My MKV files play Ok, but seem to be playing the wrong audio track. Anybody know how to fix this?

If you have SAF5 installed, you can use CTRL+ALT+numpad 0 for next audio track or CTRL+ALT+numpad 1 for next subtitle track.

Yes, but you need to modify source file.

Open your video in MKV Merge and change priory of audio/subtitle track or simply uncheck unwanted ones, then save to MKV. This process doesnot change audio/video quality, it only doing remuxing.

I'm looking at the file in MKVMerge, and I only see 2 audio tracks (both commentary). Where would the regular audio track be? Also, both of these commentary tracks have "no" for "Default track flag", yet one of them is always playing by default (in NPVR only).

Edit: Actually I do see the regular audio track at the very bottom of the list, and it is marked default. I moved it up before the other 2 audio tracks and remuxed it, and now its playing the way it should. Why is ffdshow or whatever is decoding the .mkv files ignoring the default flag?

When it comes to .mkv files, NPVR doesnt know anything about them, and just askes Windows to play them. It takes no part in the selection of which audio track etc. It just leaves this up to Windows.

Just to say that I have been a fan of hoborg's SAF codec pack for a while now and it plays MKV files just perfectly.
