I set up a Windows XP machine with NPVR as a client. I can see the TV Guide fine. But whenever I try to watch something it gives me the error: "Unable to communicate with recording service".
You'd usually get that if you've entered the "Server Name" incorrectly, or the NRecord.exe service isnt running on that machine, or you have some firewall software getting in the way of communication. Being able to see the TV Guide indicates you've entered the correct database share, but doesnt confirm these other items.
The server is running on a Windows 7 machine. I opened task manager and do not see NRecord.exe. All I see is NTray.exe. I went to Services.msc and I see NPVR Recording Service. The service is "Started" and set to automatic.
Task Manager defaults to hiding programs that run as services. To see these processes, make sure you have "show processes from all users" checked.

I guess I entered the "Server Name" incorrectly. I had it set to Rod-pc when it should've been \\Rod-pc correct? But i'm still getting the error message.

Most likely it is a firewall issue, try turning the firewalls off temporarly and see if it works.

As I mentioned earlier, you've either entered the "Server Name" incorrectly, or the NRecord.exe service isnt running on that machine, or you have some firewall software getting in the way of communication. It'll be one of those.
