I have a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1290 (Model 85xxx, Combo ATSC/QAM, SW Encode). I am trying to get the composite input working. (ATSC works fine) I get message no encoder found. I did regsvr32 "c:\program files (x86)\npvr\hcw_mcmpeg2mux.ax" but I'm thinking the analog device file may need a modification - just not sure how to do it. The attached filtercheck appears to see my tuner card as a Hauppauge WinTV 885 Video Capture card though. Any ideas?

Your device doesn't have a hardware mpeg-2 encoder, so you need the softpvr encoders registered too. Basically you need all of the files from the WinTV7 install starting with HCW_, and then regsvr32 the other two .ax files.

I need to install WinTV or just regsvr all the hcw_ files from the Driver85 directory? This tuner came with my HP and did not include the Win TV software but I was able to download WinTV V7 software and locate some hcw files in the Driver85 64bit folder. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

No, the encoder filters wont be in the driver directory. They're part of the SoftPVR software which is elsewhere in the installer (not sure exactly where though).

Thanks, I'll keep looking and let you know if I have success.

you can just download wintv7 and launch the install... the first thing it does is extract out all the files into a temp directory. from there you can fish out the needed files. look at post 3 in the thread linked in my signature - there's some instructions there and a link to a post by ToughRowToHoe describing how to get the files.

Well I followed ToughRowToHoe's instructions. I moved the following 4 HCW_ .ax files to the \program files (x86)\NPVR directory then ran the following in the command prompt as administrator:
C:\Windows\system32>regsvr32 "c:\program files (x86)\npvr\hcw_mcmpeg2mux.ax"

C:\Windows\system32>regsvr32 "c:\program files (x86)\npvr\hcw_mcddad.ax"

C:\Windows\system32>regsvr32 "c:\program files (x86)\npvr\HCW_mcl2ad.ax"

C:\Windows\system32>regsvr32 "c:\program files (x86)\npvr\HCW_mcm2vd.ax"

Still no encoder found. The WinTV program never asked for a cd to be inserted and installed all it's files in \program files\WinTV. The first file above was the only file in the SoftPVR directory the other 3 were in SMD08 and SMD06 directories. What am I doing wrong?

no, those aren't the right files. I'm pretty sure those are decoders of some sort, not encoders. let me see if I can find the files you need....

you need these files:
Code:
hcw_mcl2ae.ax
hcw_mcm2ve.ax
hcw_mcmpeg2mux.ax
hcw_mcmpgaout.dll
hcw_mcmpgvout.004
hcw_mcmpgvout.dll
hcw_mcmpeg2mux.ax is the mpeg-2 transport stream multiplexor
hcw_mcl2ae.ax is the mpeg-1 layer-2 audio encoder
hcw_mcm2ve.ax is the mpeg-2 video encoder

comment added later: in addition to those files, there are also several other hcw_mcmpgvout.00? files. On my system, only .004 was required to get the encoder to register, but I recommend simply getting all the files that start with hcw_
