did you guys catch what sub said added to post #3? he did that thing he tells everyone else not to do, edited his post with more info after everyone had already read it. you're running into a known driver bug with the Nova-TD in New Zealand - the driver can't keep up with the data flow, and the hauppauge driver guys are supposedly looking into it.
for now it sounds like your only safe bet is to just disable the second tuner on the Nova-TD.

Does the tuner feel hot?

Tuners are warm, not hot, about 40C.

Signal is fine as shown by the problem not changing if I connect the aerial via an amplifier or via a splitter (which attenuates the signal).
Its not certain channels, it only depends on which order the tuners are started up.

Thanks for pointing that out, hopefully hauppauge support will confirm that they are looking at it.

I've done some more checking. Voltage when working is 4.56, which is within the USB spec of 4.35 - 5.25
After messing about modifying a USB extension lead so I could measure the voltage under load, when I tried it again, the poor signal was showing 80-100% for a short while before dropping off again. I unplugged it again and put it in the 'fridge for a few minutes, tried again and it stayed at 100% for a few seconds (it was about 15°C). As it warmed up the quality figure dropped, at 25°C it was 60%, by 30°C it was 40%. After about 20 minutes the temperature was up to 40°C and the video was starting to suffer.
So, for now, I've got both USB sticks connected by USB extensions and hanging in mid-air. With the ambient at 22°C, both sticks are running at around 35°C and the worst quality figure is 60% which is an improvement.

Finally a reply from Hauppauge support:
"it appears that there is some issue in NZ's MPEG4 stream with the model Nova-TD Stick with the chipset used in the card. We are looking into this issue with high priority and working closely with the chipset manufacturers to fix it as quickly as possible.
Alternatively I can arrange for an other dual tuner PCIe Hybrid model - HVR-2210 which works flawlessly in NZ with zero upgrading cost. Please refer to this link http://www.hauppauge.com.sg/site/product...r2210.html for more details of the model HVR-2210."

Does anyone have any experience with the HVR-2210? Seems like a good offer.

The HVR-2210 arrived today. Its been working now for two hours, and both tuners are still showing 100%, and the pictures are good.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi all,

Just thought I'd mention that I've also had the Nova 500 TD PCI replaced by Hauppauge Singapore with an HVR-2210. So far so good, watching a perfect picture as I type.

Smiffy - Have you got the remote working with nPVR?
