Copy Never would mean that the cable companies DVR would not be able to record it either.

I've seen the threads. The output type that would prevent the recording is "disk" and it would still affect an STB if it affected Media Center. What is unknown is if it's the tuner or Media Center that is refusing to do the recordings. I personally suspect Media Center given previous copy protection flag fiascos.

Reason I posted about this card is my cable company has the card to insert in device's like TIVO and those in my area that use it don't have all the options you have with their DVR (as to the imitation I don't know). Of course the cable company reply is that is becuase it don't support on demand which is crapas who cares. I don't want on demand anything all I wanted is to use the card in my PVR so I can record regulars shows without the hassle.

Ok if HBO, Showtime and all the other prime channels don't record so be it, I don't have any of these channels anyway why should cable companies care? But regular football, baseball, etc.. games should be able to record so we can watch them later. I hope one day we can watch all the shows on the internet when we want and the cable compaies will have to shut doors and cable lab can say good-bye once and for all!!!

FCC needs to step up to stop cable lab and cable companies from being such control freaks, the days for VCR we could record it to watch later and now we are digital everyone wants more $$$. Sorry we whould be able to buy device's like VCR use to be and use it as we please. WHITHOUT ALL THE HASSLE..

Sorry will get off my soap box now..

Sorry to resurrect the dead here . . . since the court decision that legalized vcrs the programmers and cable companies have been trying to figure out how to shut this down. It's taken years but technology is now allowing them to get the job done and that's the unfortunate fact.

A while back I saw a news artical where a cable company had replaced dvrs with what amounted to media tanks. Basically the cable co recorded everything that came through their system in digital format and then would stream it to the customer's home. They claimed it had many benefits - the two biggest were reliability as the hard drives in dvrs will all eventually fail, and no recording time limit since recording time used to be limited by hard drive size.

The programmers cried foul and said that it was a video on deman service but the courts ruled it wasn't, it was just a better method of dvr service. The interesting thing was that if you forgot to set a timer for a show all was not lost - you could still view the program. Basically the court said if you were a subscriber when the program aired you had the right to view it later.

How long they retained the recordings I dunno. I really wish I would've kept the url for the story . . . did anyone else see it and keep the url?

I believe it has to do with Cablevision, I remember because they are in my area and it was in a few newspapers. I think they wanted to start around 2007-08, got sued and eventually won. They still don't have it yet, not sure if there is more litigation or they are just slow.
