1.Does Evr work well?
2.does Hip work ?
3.have you had any other annoying issues ?

reason for asking im over the useless drivers that nvidia produce for their cards on xp
the box in the top left the tearing the blurry panning shots bla bla bla

Not related to your specifics, going to Vista with EVR from XP was the single best thing I did for GBPVR stability. Win7 is likely even better and if it is as cheap there as it is here ($90 CDN) I'd recommend it over RAM or a new video card. I have never fought with drivers, bad timelines etch that were a constant frustration for me on XP.

I'd have to echo what Martin said. Moving on from XP was the best thing I ever did for my HTPC. Until I went to Windows 7, I really never got it to work right. I got so tired of trying different video cards, different drivers, different decoders, different settings, various acts of ritual sacrifice, self flagelation, speaking in tongues, etc, trying to get consistently good quality video playback without tearing, stuttering or interlacing artifacts. I was VERY close to throwing in the towel on the whole project. Then I went to Windows 7, and a huge portion of my problems went away. I still had to use VMR9-FSE to get perfect video playback, but everything just worked. Finally NPVR came, and sub patched the EVR renderer so it would do negative aspect ratios, and bliss ensued...

As you can see from my signature I run a Radeon HD4550, but I really doubt I would have anything different to say if I had an NVidia card.

I'm afraid my experience (so far) is the complete opposite of yours johnsonx42. My XP build was flawless, both within GBPVR (VMR9-FSE) and with PowerDVD for Blu-rays. All decoders worked as they should, both for SD and HD, there was no stuttering, no tearing, etc, etc.

With Windows 7, I'm having all sorts of problems. Blu-ray playback just isn't working smoothly at all - even with Reclock, and only bits of GBPVR are happy (I'm not moving to NPVR yet; but the move to Windows7 is the start of it). I need VMR9 for the aspect ratios, and things seem ok with SD as DXVA is still used. With HD, I've had to move to software decoding, but my new i3 can cope happily enough and the picture quality looks the same, but the lipsync has gone all to hell, and at different rates over different channels too. Getting decent DVD playback with navigation was difficult too, but I think I cracked that last night (using the Arcsoft decoder; navigation worked with ffdshow but the picture wasn't "right").

Outside of GBPVR, HIP was a non-starter with x64, so I've gone with a 32bit install. It seems to be working ok with an MCE remote (bar the occasional error when trying to save the config) but I don't use a blaster so don't know what it would be like with that.

My wife and baby are away for the week, but if I haven't got these issues sorted by the weekend (I've been "testing" on and off for months and thought I was good to go) then it's back to XP I'm afraid, which will really screw up my NPVR migration plans.

I recently migrated my XP machines to Win 7. Originally i tried to use 1 XP client and the rest we Win 7 with one Vista Machine. I did have issues with NPVR in XP on the client, and since moving to Win 7 (Nvidia Card) no more problems with NPVR and using EVR has been great. I did however have excellent playback with GBPVR in XP, but have not tested GBPVR on this Win 7 machine as i no longer need it NPVR is working great.

I do know however there are difference in GBPVR and NPVR and was frustrated that NPVR would not work with XP (had to use DxVA which requires VRM9 in XP). now i couldnt be happier

I use an Nvidia card and have used it with exactly the same hardware on my server with both XP and Win 7. I must say that Windows 7 and EVR have been a much better experience for me. Also, the Nvidia Pure Video decoder seemed to not work as well with W7 and EVR as it did on XP. I have gotten the same or better results using the Microsoft decoder with 7 and would recommend using it. I had a couple of issues that I just could not resolve with XP, being that GBPVR would stop responding sometimes when FF or RW the recordings and some recordings would record with jittery video. So far I have not run into these issues on Win7 and NPVR. All around better experience on my end with Windows 7.

I was a big fan of Pure Video but when W7 came out, and I got new AMD video cards, I started having some problems and some occasional BSD's. I also give good marks to the MS decoder and have seen no issues with it.

decoders will be interesting since i have used nvidia for audio on xp and cyberlink8 for video (all my video is mpeg2)

I'm another very satisfied user of Win7/EVR/Microsoft DTV-DVD decoders with the following "disclaimers":
- I only record and play US MPEG2 video; no Blueray, H.264, mkv, etc
- Most recordings are HD clear QAM using the dvr-ms mux, almost no analog anymore, some firewire using the ATI mux to produce MPEG2-PS files
- The occasional firewire recording will not play in GBPVR, but usually plays in VLC or KMPlayer - I think this is due to a crappy stream from the cable company
- I use AC3 filter for audio
- I haven't tried NPVR on the Win7 "production" box - GBPVR does all I need reliably so no need for NPVR yet.
- The 9500GT works great with the Microsoft decoder, less great with the Nvidia decoder, so I have retired it. MPC-HC is so-so.
- I miss the Fill aspect ratio for the occasional letterboxed analog recording - ATM, this would be my reason for going to NPVR.

I think XP is just not up to handling HD video.
