Greetings forum

I am totally new to the pvr community. So naturally, absolutely new to NPVR. I am about completed turning an ole p4, 3.0 ghz (I had stored away, I don't throw anything away so my wife says Wink ) with a mix of some gathered parts & some new, into a "temporary" pvr/htpc. I am planning on building my 1st one from scratch, once I feel comfortable with this whole thing. I Was directed to this piece of software and hence this forum.

I have lots to learn and am willing to devote some time (although, remember I am married:p ) to reading posts & experimenting. I just need a little direction.

I downloaded & installed the 1.5.36 from johnsons post/sticky

I then downloaded & unpacked Patch Archive, v1.5.36 Final, and, fyi - I did this "After" downloading & installing the necessary/required updates as stated by johnson. eg. Visual c & direct x. also confirmed my WMP version was 9.0+

I recieve OTA broadcasts solely. I installed an old HVR-1600 tuner, running XP Pro Sp3, for now 1 hdd x 80gb, purchased 2tb will install soon - which I will be using for storage only, os will remain on 80gb.

My question: I was somewhat unclear on the instructions to load the patch file. I don't think I directed the download or install properly?
I don't think I did this properly:
Quote:Installation Notes These "patches" are simply replacement files for the existing NPVR program files. You should extract them and copy them over the existing files; the default directory is C:\Program Files\NPVR.

I personally did not direct them to install/copy "Over" any existing files. Is this done automatically? Because I did not see (maybe missed the understanding) how to do this.

Is there a way to confirm if all is installed correctly? I did find how to locate the Ver # of my npvr install & it was confirmed to be the latest. but revision was questionable. Meaning if patches installed will be a revision change?

Thanks a whole bunch!!! From what I am reading and seeing - it appears many are absolutely enamored with this piece of media management software. Smile
I would like to be as well Big Grin

First of, welcome to the forums! Smile

Quote:I then downloaded & unpacked Patch Archive
Where did you unpack them to? The patches are not "installed" as such. The delivery method is a zip file. Extract the zip somewhere and then copy and paste the contents to the NPVR program files folder.

To check it's worked simply check the file size and/or date of the files in the zip to those on your disk.

The NPVR version number does not change when a patch is issued. Sub provides the patches to address specific issues that not all users may encounter. Per McBain - unzip the patch file to a folder that is not the NPVR program folder, and then copy the files to the NPVR program folder. Stop the NPVR recording service prior to copying the files as files in use probably cannot be "copied over".

Hello, & much appreciation to ya for the reply!

Just to sure that I understand clearly, I should copy & paste the patch files once unzipped/unpacked (that's the same thing right?) to install/copy over the existing files in the "Program" folder? Correct? Just to be sure, I am highlighting below in red where I think you suggested I place them in. Or did I misunderstand & it should be in the folder highlighted in green?

Quote:NextPVR is split between two directories
Default Program directory

* All 32 bit C:\Program Files\NPVR
*All 64 bit C:\Program Files (x86)\NPVR

Default Data directory.

The location of the data directory depends on the version of Windows you are running:

* Windows Vista, 7, Server 2008: C:\users\public\npvr
* Windows XP, Server 2003: c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\npvr

For confirmation's sake:
The zipped file is 638 KB
The unzipped file folder is 1.8 MB & it houses 7 files

If I understand correctly I will "Copy these 7 files & paste them into one of the two folders above? And that should correct the 37 (or so) bugs identified?

I just double checked something & FYI:
  • Green Highlight above is 14.5 mb w/ 20 files where 1 is a folder w/5 files
  • The Red highlight above is not applicable? There is no "application data" folder

Thanks again & have a pleasant day.

no, the update files go into the Program directory, the one you highlighted in green.

the data directory on xp can be hard to find, as it is hidden by default (not by NPVR, it's a Windows thing). you can find it either by typing the path manually (start->run->C:\documents and settings\all users\application data). In "My Computer" you can also just go into Tools->Folder Options and go to the View tab - therein check the box for "Show Hidden Files and Folders" then you'll be able to navigate to the folder in the usual manner.

once you install all the patches and start NextPVR, you can confirm that you have the update by looking in the NPVR.log - at the beginning there will be a line to like "Mutex created - must be only instance". if you have that line then you are running the updated version of the software.

Okay, I think I have sucess & now I feel better knowing that, for now I am going to start using NPVR correctly.

I have recieved confirmation & was confident enough to proceed to paste the updated Patch files into the correct folder.

I then made it possible to locate the "data" files of NPVR & checked the log. Opening the npvr text file, I did confirm that the 1st line did read, as suggested by Johnson:

Quote:once you install all the patches and start NextPVR, you can confirm that you have the update by looking in the NPVR.log - at the beginning there will be a line to like "Mutex created - must be only instance". if you have that line then you are running the updated version of the software.

Thanks so much guys, I will now proceed to tinker & play and figure this thing out a little at a time.
Hopefully it won't be as difficult as it appears at 1st glances. Rolleyes

As NPVR is fairly new the help & other documentation is work in progress, still worth a read though: http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...QuickStart
