...it broke the ability of my NPVR box to go into standby.
SP1 for Windows 7 has been pretty widely reported in the online media as being a bit of a nothing update. Apart from a couple of obscure fixes, it's basically just a roll up of all the fixes that have been distributed over windows update since 7 first came out.
My PVR is running NPVR 1.5.36 with all the hotfixes on Windows 7 x64 and used to run flawlessly, until SP1. I can only recommend that you don't bother installing it.
