I've installed Haali Media Splitter, FLV Splitter, and ffdshow. I have an assortment of .mkv, .flv, and .mp4 files that all use the AVC1 video codec that all play back fine using Windows Media Player. However, I can't get them to play back in GBPVR or NPVR. They both crash. The last few lines in the PVRX2.exe-native.log were:

2011-03-09 21:22:55.164 INFO DirectShowPlayerBase::playVideoFile(Z:\Videos\1-Pussycat Dolls - Sway.mkv)

2011-03-09 21:22:55.265 VERBOSE getSetting(PreferredMpegPlaybackDemux)

The last few lines in the NPVR.log were:

2011-03-09 21:50:53.973 [DEBUG][1] CheckCache() indicates:C:\Users\Public\NPVR\skin\Default\Videos\folder.jpg is not cached

2011-03-09 21:50:54.531 [DEBUG][1] Adding EVR renderer

I've tried setting the H264 codec in config to both the Microsoft DTV-DVD codec as well as ffdshow. Windows media player must be using the Microsoft DTV-DVD codec since disabling the AVC1 codec in ffdshow has no effect. Again Windows Media Player plays all of the files fine. What are GBPVR and NPVR doing differently ? I thought if Windows Media Player played the files so would NPVR.

Thanks,

Kyle

NPVR doesnt take any part in playing .mkv, .mp4, or .flv files. It just askes directshow to play them. In this case, it sounds like directshow is unable to find a combination of filters to play these files.

You'll see the same thing when you download the directshow GraphEdit utility, and select the 'render media file' menu option, and point it at your .mkv, .mp4, or .flv file.

The fix is outside of NPVR, and involves you installing the correct decoders and source/splitter filters.

I installed SAF and that took care of the problem for me
If you want to know why nPVR is the bomb, ask my wife!

Thanks to both of you. I figured that if Windows Media Player played the video then so should NPVR. I tried to build the graph in graphedit and it crashed also. I just installed the SAF5 package and it all works fine now.

Thanks again.

In older versions this was a decent test for whether Directshow could play something, but recent versions of WMP they've started doing a lot of non-directshow stuff. GraphEdit is the best place to check.
