If I convert it to MP4 it plays perfectly. Weird, but I can live with it, other than that, the little WD HD TV Live plus box does a great job.
For this it may be worth a simple remux to to .mpg container, so that you dont have to reencode the audio/video. Its a very quick operation, and your WD TV Live plus player may cope with those better.

ffmpeg -y -i %1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f vob "%~dpn1.mpg"

where %1 is the full patch and file name to the .ts file as passed by npvr to postprocessing.bat

In general if you are going to remux for playing on a modern extender like the WD , I'd recommend remuxing to an MKV container. If you use johnsonx42's solution consider not using the -f vob you don't want that for HD broadcasts from you HDHR that is a DVD format only.

ah, yes, thanks martin. I had pulled that from a thread where the discussion was about SD MPEG-2. I didn't think about the application of that to HD. That said, I think I have actually tested that exact commandline to re-mux an HD .ts file and it played fine.

can ffmpeg remux to mkv, or is a different utility needed for that?

My recommendation was for extenders which often need to follow very specific rules that are overlooked on a PC. It still might play or ffmpeg might ignore the option, but why risk it?

As far as I know you need to split the audio and video from the file and run mkvmerge but this is using i/o and not cpu. I'd check with -statik- to see what is possible

sub Wrote:Hmm, here is another one you can try.

Sub, Had a chance to run another full QAM scan with the new NPVRTSMon. It found the same 55 channels as the first time. The only difference was it changed some of the NPVR channel numbers a little and I lost 1 dead channel. I'm more inclined to think the "dead" channels are actually channels the cable co is holding open, just not actively transmitting on. Of the 28 channels with no channel info (just a frequency listed) 15 of them are actually live channels. I spent some time this evening trying to map them out. I've added a spreadsheet of whats dead, what's live and the cable co channel numbers if it's of any help. Honestly though, it's working perfect as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather if find too many channels rather than miss some.

On another thought...

If I'm correct in my thinking, a QAM tuner is for the non-HD digital channels & a ATSC tuner is for the non-HD digital channels. The HDHR both a QAM tuner and a ATSC tuner, but I'm not getting anything when I try a ATSC scan. Should I be getting some channels on the ATSC side or am I off base???

I'm not entirely sure this is what you're asking, but a QAM tuner is for receiving digital cable channels, and an ATSC tuner is for receiving over-the-air channels from an antenna. HD or non-HD doesnt make any difference.

Aaahhh, my tuner understanding was a bit off. Just so I got it straight... I'm learning (slowly)

NTSC tuner - analog channels
ATSC tuner - over-the-air digital channels
QAM tuner - unscrambled digital channels over cable

Thanks again for all you do and putting up with the stupid noob questions Smile

yes, you have it correct. at the risk of re-confusing you, what we call 'atsc' and 'qam' are really both ATSC. QAM is actually the signal modulation used for an ATSC tv signal on digital cable (Quarter Amplitude Modulation); broadcast ATSC uses 8VSB modulation instead. QAM allows a much higher bitrate (and thus more tv channels to be carried on a single frequency), but is less tolerant of errors and reflections so it's not suited to broadcasting. Originally ATSC tuners where only for broadcast TV using the 8VSB modulation, and they were called ATSC tuners; when the ability to do digital cable and QAM modulation came along, the new tuners and tuning mode had to be called something else, so they got called "QAM". So now ATSC means digital antenna, QAM means digital cable even though it isn't technically correct.
