I run the standard Windows XP firewall and use a NetGear wired router in connecting to the Internet. I have no idea how to relate this to NPVR since everything else I do runs fine and is okay. Do I have to set up a local server or something? Don't see why since I don't have to do anything special with BlazeTV or Pinnacle TV software when wanting to record shows. I hear what you are saying, but I don't know what to do with that information.

Do you see NRecord.exe running in the task manager? You'll probably need to click the 'show processes from all users' to see this, since it runs in the background as a service.

You had several things going on in your last logs. Can you just start NPVR, click live tv, wait a few seconds, then zip and attach your npvr.log and nrecord.log?

I have seen it there at times in the past. I will reboot, then do as you suggest, then attach the logs. It will be a few minutes.

I get a picture now when I click on a channel. I haven't tried anything further, like the EPG or the record function. Work is pressing me so I may not have lots of time until later.

Yes, both NTray.exe and NRecord. exe are both running, as seen in Task Manager, Processes tab.

Ok - you definitely have it running then. When it wasnt running earlier, this may have explained the problems you had get into recordings etc.

Glad you got it working.

Thank you for your help - you and the others. I have not yet tried to record again, but I was able to apparently update the EPG and rescan channels without crashing. So there is improvement on those fronts. Later tonight I will be able to do more experimentation, but duty calls at present.

your latest logs show you have the DirectX runtime error resolved, so you're making good progress. you'll see once you have the basics understood, this software really is very easy to use.

I have yet to do it, but my understanding is you hit CTRL-K to start recording (while watching a show) and then CTRL-S should stop recording. Pausing and returning to play is easy. I'm just surprised that the keyboard shortcuts mention how to start recording, but the STOP function isn't listed in that section.

Once you start recording a show, the recording continues until the show is complete (as defined by the EPG). There are 2 ways I can think of to stop a recording, but Ctrl-S isn't one of them (hence why it's not listed in the keyboard shortcut section Wink).

I usually just go to the Recordings screen, and look at either "What's New" or "Pending"; the in progress recording will be listed as "Recording". You can select the recording and choose "Cancel" in the dialog.

The other way is through the TV Guide (F1) - select the show entry being recorded (should be highlighted in red), and then "Cancel" will be an option.

note that there is a current bug in the LiveTV Guide (the one that shows over LiveTV) where it doesn't properly highlight the show you're currently watching - just move the selector down one show and then back up, and it will highlight properly.

also, just so you understand, NPVR is always recording whatever you're watching, so you can always pause or rewind. You don't have to explicitly record what you're watching. Once you've pressed Record, then you're passing a show recording request over to the recording engine, and that new recording is both in addition to, and independant of, the LiveTV recording. The difference is that the LiveTV recording buffer is dumped when you exit LiveTV, while a Recording continues until the program ends and becomes available to watch later in the Recordings list. Hope that helps.
