Trouble Getting started

I am having two problems with the npvr that id like to get help with. Fist and probably most importantly I get a black screen when I go to live tv. Second when i click tv guide It says no show detail for all the channels and times.

I have Hauppauge 418 tuner. It seems like the NPVR picks up my tunner just fine. when i check devices it has:
Atsc Hauppauge WinTV 418 BDA Tuner
QAMHauppauge WinTV 418 BDA Tuner
Analog Hauppauge WinTV 418Video Capture

I clicked analog hauppauge winTV video capture and was able to scan all my channels in.

After that everything looked to be in order...but it still doesnt work. Any suggestions on how to get this program working? I hate the software that came with the haippauge and this software seems quite a bit better...

The lack of video is probably down to not setting your decoders in the Settings->Decoders screen.

The 'no show details' is probably because you haven't setup any EPG. It's usuable without an EPG, but much better with one. NextPVR doesnt include any out-of-the-box EPG (other than for DVB countries which are able to use the broadcast EPG) so you have to supply your own EPG, since it'd cost $$$ for me to license EPG information. In the US, people typically use either xmltv (via mc2xml utility or similar), or schedules direct as their EPG source.

Does the tuner work with the hauppauge program? That way you know you have all of the required drivers and such. To get the guide working you need to get the EPG (electronic program guide) information from somewhere to fill in the guide. I use schedules direct but this is a pay service. There are places to get it free I think.

The tuner works just fine with the hauppage program...the program just isnt my favorite. I did not touch the decoders, as I have no clue what to select. Do you guys have any tips on which decoders to select? Each pull down menu has many different options. Are the options computer specific and would it help if I typed out all the options, or does everybody have the same options?

The application doesnt install any decoders, so you there is no default decoders. You pretty much need to go there any select some decoders from those already available on your machine.

In the US you'd need to select an MPEG2 Video decoder, and the AC3 and MPEG1Layer2 audio decoders.

Ok thanks! I was able to get the video and audio to work. Now im working on the tv guide. I downloaded mc2xml, ran program, entered my information, and selected my provider. It looked like it did an install and then it disappeared. What step am i missing to get the get the guide up and running?

Sorry, I've never used mc2xml, so I'm not well placed to answer questions about it. It's not needed in my part of the world.

I got most of it figured out reading some posts on the forum, just cant seem to figure out how to set it up so the XMLTV file auto updates each night.

Anyway I just wanted to thank you sub for all the great help, and most importantly such a great free program! thanks a lot!
