Not to bring this back up, but is the standard procedure now to just build a small client pc to run in the extra rooms over using an MVP/NMT? Just trying to figure out what is the best option for a client/viewer of my main NPVR install.

Everyone to their own choice I guess.
Personally I don't want to use a client PC for watching TV no matter how quite or small it is! Firstly there is no way I could build a PC of just about any sort for the price of an NMT even when taking the price of freight to NZ into the equation let alone a small quite one & even then if I could it wouldn't be as small & quiet as our NMT's. Secondly I just can't be bothered going through the hassle of getting codecs to work properly when I can just hook another NMT up & in a couple of minutes have it fully working on the TV.

I agree, NMT is much better (IMHO) for quality, size, noise, price, ease of setup etc etc etc....
The only thing that I had thought that I would like would be a quick and dirty web browser for the TV and this is missing from the NMT.

Ive been looking at this now....
MVP was support natively with nPVR (i use them), problem is it will only run MPG2 files up to 480p i think (from memory), it is very clunky due to CPU size. However plug-in, it will pull the nPVR interface so its VERY nice. Ive been looking at the MVP-HD unit from Hauppauge (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/d...vp-hd.html) thing is this appears to have a whole OS installed with interface, so this means it will see mapped drives rather than a nPVR interface (as with MVP), please correct me if i am wrong. I personally want a dumb terminal (which is what these are) that will pull ALL of its display from the nPVR server, the nPVR install can do this set as a "client" problem is if you want the same plug-ins then you need to configure these on that client as well so isnt a complete dumb terminal. It appears getting hardware to consistently run as a "MVP" looks like itâs getting hard from what i hear..... so maybe a very cut down version of Windows and a nPVR client would be the way to go, however a way of getting all the plugs to pull its menu from the server would be nice. A good question here is, does NMT and Hauppauge MVP-HD getting hard to get a client to pull the MVP menus?

No it wouldn't be too hard but so far only Syabas (makers of the Popcorn Hour) have shown interest in providing legal access to the required software libraries need to build an NPVR client. My GBPVR client pc just went belly up.
PCH doesn't have any A-110 refurbs right now and I really want to get the living room back online. Would an A-210 be acceptable? We don't really watch tv through the client, pretty much just use it to watch xvids and to schedule recordings and watch them (after they've recorded). I poked around fleaBay, etc. but there didn't seem to be much of the old generation NMTs available, and what was available was going as high as a new unit with a warranty so I'm inclined to want to go with a new unit. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! Steve

Sorry there is only the client for the first generation NMT's at this point. If you can give up the NPVR functionality many extenders should allow good xvid playback, but many have issues with mpeg-ts playback. Even on the NMT mpvmcx2 rivals (or in my case surpasses) playback on the PC but the native player does not.
As for the A-210, I am working slowly on a flash client but it might not come to fruition. In any case I would wait for the A-300. Martin

What's the difference between the A-110 and A-100 again? Was it just the USB ports and power switch or something like that?

The A110 had a few updates designed to match so of the other NMT's coming out at the time.
- DTS 2.0 downmix, - power switch - optical audio output vs coax - HDMI 1.3a vs 1.1 - SATA HDD connector vs PATA - more HD audio format pass through - USB slave connection - About $25 more on ebay currently . If you are buying used the A110 could be a year "newer" Martin |
