Of course, you could build a retro pc and add an usb storage to take advantage of readyboost, super prefetch etc., but in this case the advantage were limited to these exceptions.

This is not easy to proof, because Windows Vista and 7 reserves the whole amount of available ram for caching purposes. Of course this ram is usable by applications at any time, but even my 16 gig machines with Windows 7 show everywhere "0 Byte free" in the taskmanager. To compare the efficiency you have to control every application with tools like process explorer. As an example put npvr on a windows xp and a 7 machine. Configure it identical. Let 'em both run same tasks and view on both systems, how many ram they were using. Is there a noticeable difference between xp and 7?

Installation != working system. Installing Windows 7 from an usb stick is much more faster, then installing it from dvd too. Smile

Last but not least, we should go back to the start question. He HAS already a windows xp license. We don't know, what hardware he has. To recommend buying a windows 7 license at all cost ist simply stupid.
Your arguments are falling on it's own irrelevancy, the video proves absolutly nothing at all. Anyone can make a video showing exactly what they want. What counts is real life experience, and I think all of us has sufficient to say what we are saying.
End of discussion.

Your video demonstration of why Win 7 is slow is stupid. The OP simply asked if there are any benefits to Window 7 and there are several, especially if he wants to use the box as a client too. It is well worth the $100 for the OEM license.

Mmmmm, thanks for that. Very entertaining :-). I've had a damn good clean-up on the PC and i'm going to see how it performs for the next couple of weeks. It i decide it needs a rebuild, i am going to go for Windows 7 because i don't intend rebuilding it twice.

You can write something like this only for yourself, not for other people.

wow, blast from the past. I ran into a Win95 box earlier this year, but I haven't seen 3.1 in a LONG time.

the minesweeper game script is busted though, unless that's one of the things that only works right on FF.

In the Norwegian language we have sevral words borrowed from other languages. One of them is "besserwisser", now I don't need to explain that to you, but for our egnligh speaking friends I will. Besserwisser describes a person who posses a certain amound of knowledge and then beleive that he or she knows EVERYTHING better that everybody else. They always has a lot of seemingly good arguments for their point of view, but when you poke the arguments a little bit they are full of air and easy punctures. Now you ShiningDragon act as one of those, you obviously don't see when a discussion is lost, your arguments have all fallen to the ground, diminished of all credability. So stop posting BS in this forums.

Dear reddwarf,
i didn't wanted write it ever, but after you wrote such nice things ...
A long time i readed your posts, months ago. I have read suspicious tips and hints you gave other people. Of course, mostly with good background of helping other.
But never before i have read so much bullshit from one person, then from you. Often enough you recommend useless things (as an example MCE Standby Tool) without fixing problems itself.
Not me is the so called "Besserwisser" or better known as "Klugscheisser", this descriptions meets exactly your needs. Talking a lot of things, without knowing anything. Example? Here. Sometimes it looks like you just want to post something, without thinking about the problem itself. MCE Standby Tool as solution for all ... even for corrupted os installations or take a look here. Talking, codecpack #1 is bad, but recommending codecpack #2 without explaining it advantages (especially because it's using the same components as codecpack #1) and explain it with "your experience" ...
And much more stuff like this was produced over months a lot by you.
So i'll answer with your own signature: "Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen werfen ... ." Wink
And i recommend one thing to you: Don't ever get personally again to me, i won't accept this. And in the future i will react on your postings, if you recommend stupid things again to other people.
