I searched for any info on NEWA being able to use Comskip on playback but the results were four years old and inconclusive.
So,,, I ask,,, If Nextpvr can use comskip for playback of recordings is it possible for NEWA to do the same? I realize that NEWA uses VLC and it may be dependant on VLC reading and implementing the *.edl but the savings on file size (17% reduction) and time (manually FF) would be a great advantage.

Unless the folks at VLC do not the see any legal need to skip/remove a segment from a file?

From what I understand comskip works on recordings as they are recorded via the parallelprocessing.bat file. They can also be post processed via a nightly routine. Either way, comskip will save the final recording without commercials, whether viewed via NEWA, or any other means.

There is no way to apply comskip to a file being currently viewed.

Comskip reads through a recording and identifies commercials via various logarithms and creates a comskip file that has the video timeline in it with the commercial areas cut out. Some 3rd party utilities can take in the outputted comskip file and read in the video source and create a resulting file that is the video minus the commercials.

GBPVR (not sure about NPVR) allows the reading of the comskip file when playing back via the pc client and you can skip the commercials.....the commercial spots are even (at least in GPVR) marked on the timeline that can be displayed.

NEWA does not have the ability to support the comskip file.

If you find a way to pass in on the vlc command line to use a comskip file post the results....I can see if I can figure out how to add the option into NEWA.

It appears that VLC can "skip" commercials by converting the EDL to CHAP. VLC then just divides the video into chapters, some are program blocks and some are commercial blocks. You still have to manually skip the chapter though.
I found a tool that converts the EDL to CHAP but haven't screwed around with it yet:

I did some research before the NMT had full GBPVR support and chapters were really designed for mp4 and mkv (I'm not sure if the work with .ts) and I they aren't automatic. comskip will generate them if you enable them

Thanks Martin,
I put that in the comskip.ini and got output for both .ts and .avi but I'm clueless as to how to get VLC to load it. My playback menu chapters item is inactive.

As I wrote, I think it is for mp4 and mkv files only. These are better formats for 2012 anyway.
