It would be nice to be able to stream a recording and still skip commercials; it there a way to approach this?

EDIT: I have just noticed that for the first time I can get the pause and _skip_ to work on streams; perhaps I didn't have a high enough priority assigned for that feature to work well before now- and I also just updated to 1.016, although that shold be the same build as I had installed for .9912.

so that helps!

Not that I am aware of.....VLC would need to nativley handle integrating the comskip file.

I asked about this in 2006 and Erik was on the thread and they started talking about a possible way to do it, but the thread went cold. I don't know, however, if things are progressing behind the scenes. It would be really nice.

Nothing from my end.....the would be a VLC effort and not an EWA effort.

VLC used as a player understands the .edl format, did anyone check if its only the player that knows .edl or if possibly also the streamer knows how to use it?

I could not find documentation that VLC understands .edl (edit decision list) ,but mplayer does support it.

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/edl.html

It looks like comskip can output EDL format with a flag:

---
Changes in 0.79.98
- Removed the enable_mencoder_pts=1 setting and instead introduced the output_edlp=1 setting enable generating a pts based mencoder file
----

If VLC server really does understand EDL format, then it should be scriptable to convert the skip file being used at present (.txt contraining cut points in whatever format is it) to EDL format and then invoking VLC server with options to load the edit list for the stream.

My error.
VLC does not understand the .edl file format.
I requested it in the VLC new feature request forum thread.
Its rather simple to implement but someone has to do it.....
The .edl file format is used by mplayer/mencoder and can be generated by Comskip.

I didn't even know regular skipping was available when streaming via the EWA (of course just about all my streaming is for when I'm at work & since I can't install VLC, I have to playback in Windows)

Can you skip forward/back when playing back in VLC? not that this info would help me - I just want to know Smile
