I am planning to go to digital DVB-C. I am today using GB-PVR with Hauppauge PVR150 on my analogue CABLE-TV.

CABLE-TV provider uses CA-Module Crypto CAM CryptoGuard and all DVB-C digital is encrypted.

I am new to recording digital so I have some questions:

which recording hardware and CI can I use that would work with CA-Module Crypto CAM CryptoGuard and with DVB-C digital which is encrypted?

Can I still open the recorded files from another computer or do I need some special software for reading the file? (only using mpg today)

is there some similar utility to Xrecord - which allows you to se info about the recording outside NextPVR?

If you are going for CI/CAM solution all Technotrend and Hauppauge cards with CI is supported in NPVR. However, with a HW CAM you will not be able to benefit from npvr's multirecord feature (ie recording more than one channel from a single card). But if your cable provider pairs the smartcard with the serial number of your STB or CAM that is the only solution for now. If they are not paired, you can get a Phoenix (or 100% compatible) cardreader and use a cardserver (like NewCS) and a softcam (like Acamd) to decrypt channels on-the-fly. That will also allow you to have more that one tuner receiving encrypted channels with only one smartcard.

Once you have recorded a show which is decrypted one way or the other, you can watch it from any computer with access that can play .ts files (npvr records only .ts files, which are the standard for digital broadcast).

There is no similar thing to Xrecord, but you can ask npvr to store metadata for recordings in a separate .xml file, which every app that understands xml can read and display.

Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

thanks for good answer.

my cable provider pairs the card with the CA as I understand it.

I can have as many cards I like and still see all the base channels (25 channels or so) and those channels is what I need.

So to have same functionality as of today I would need two TV cards with CI and the CA and Card.

I will check some Hauppauge cards to start with.

looked at
HAUPPAUGE WINTV HVR-930C

anyone with good experience of that specific card together with CI in NPVR

do you use WIn 7 or XP?

64/32 bit?

I use W7Ux64, and a Technotrend C1500 with CI/CAM for DVB-T (Riks-TV) since they pair the smartcards with CAM and/or STB. For DVB-C I use Cinergy-C, Cinergy HTC USB XS and Technotrend C1501 together with NewCS and Acamd. If you have to give the provider the serial number of your STB or CAM then they are most likely paired, if they don't ask you should have a good chance of using cardserver/softcam.
