My sister just got an ipad and I'm wondering if she can use NEWA to dnld video files to play later.
I don't get much exposure to Macs so if this possible could a walkthrough be provided?

I don't use or own a Mac myself....so I can't help out with that. I would imagine if you recordings were in a format that the iPad can play she could download them and play them. VLC does make a player that runs on the Mac.....this may actually allow her to play your recordings.....and if you install VLC on your server she could stream the recordings and view them (VLC on the server will make Stream Now option appear in NEWA Guide, Details and Manage Recordings.....when invoked VLC is started on the server which reads the file being requested, transcodes it into a stream (i.e. mp4 format) which cuts down on the ISP bandwidth needed for the large video files that are not transcoded).

I can help, a little. I couldn't get it to work with NEWA.

Option 1: use something like Handbrake to transcode the video to something that iTunes/iDevices likes. I've done this, it works, a bit time consuming.

Options 2: Since I wanted to steam other video content from my library, I went with Air Video: http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html

Buy the iPad app for a whopping $3, install the free server from the link above, and in about 15 minutes you'll likely be streaming anything. It'll transcode on the the fly. Just make your NPVR "Recordings" directory a share.

It doesn't store the content on the iPad, but providing she has access to wireless, it'll stream anywhere. I've watched shows from my NPVR install at home while at lunch at work on mine. Streams very well.

My kids watch stuff on their iPods too.

Best $3 I ever spent!

Did you have VLC on the ipad when it didn't work?

+1
While I'm not a fan of watching video on small screens, I have this for selfish reasons. I have an almost OCD tendency to record football and while a current game is on live, play back parts of older games I taped. I am made fun of all the time for my OCD and geekiness.
Actually, the video is very smooth. VLC Streamer works ok and there is a free version but it takes a bit more to get it working well and I think Air Video is worth the $3.....it's already been updated twice since I had the ipad and updates are always free.

sounds good paul. again though my use will only be for video file transfer and watching later(without NEWA) but thru VLC (or air vid?) My upload connection is only 30kbs.

check that, it's actually 256kbps (I don't think I can stream with that)

Did you get that right (30kbps?) or was it a typo? What sort of connection are you talking about?

It might be just as easy to setup a simple web server (using IIS for example) and just get your sister to open a web browser and download files that way. Alternatively something like a BitTorrents server. Not that I know anything about BitTorrents but I'm sure there's an Apple app for that.

If the plan is to only download and play later then just use the download option on the NEWA Recordings and Videos....that should work on any computer since it is using an http transfer.

I'm another Air Video user. It really works well and it is worth the $3. Watching video on the iPad is much better experience than you might think.
