And what happens if you add a recording after the epg update which occurs before the next update happens? I think most of my recordings are set this way, although it gives me something to think about when it doesn't.

It schedules the recording IF and ONLY IF there is a single tuner available to record the entire length of the program. I know from maddening experience that it will NOT reallocate recordings to other tuners.

Consider the case where you are scheduled to record the following shows, and have 2 tuners which both get channels A, B, C, D and E:

1. Channel A1- 7:00p to 7:35p
2. Channel B - 7:00p to 7:30p
3. Channel A2 - 7:30p to 8:00p
4. Channel C - 8:35p to 9:05p
5. Channel D - 9:00p to 10:00pm

(channel A1 and A2 denote different virtual channels on the same physical channel)

It is now 6:00pm, none of these recordings have started. You are looking through the TV Guide and you find a movie on Channel E from 7:00pm to 9:00pm that you want to record. You try to record it, but get the 'no capture device available' message. Of course, two things are recording at 7:00pm. So you decide you can live without recording 1, so you cancel it. Only 1 tuner is needed for the rest of the recordings until 9pm, so now you can record the movie, right? Wrong. Recording 1 was on Tuner 2, because it was created from an newer, and therefore lower-priority recurring recording. Recording 2 is on Tuner 1, but Recording 3 is back on Tuner 2 because it was using Multi-record to overlap with Recording 1. Fine, you decide you can live without Recording 3 and cancel it too... so Tuner 2 should be free now, right? Wrong. Recording 5 was also from a higher-priority recurring request, so it's on Tuner 1... which means Recording 4 is set for, drumroll please, Tuner 2. But you really want Recording 4, so you cancel Recording 5 in hopes that it will now move Recording 4 for you. It won't, the movie on Channel E still can't be recorded. Finally you cancel Recording 4 and schedule the movie on Channel E.

Keep in mind that you, the user, have no idea which tuner each show is scheduled for... all you know is that you keep deleting shows, and it keeps saying "no capture device available".

Now that the new Recording 6 is scheduled, you actually can reschedule recordings 3, 4, and 5. They'll all be scheduled on to Tuner 1.

I think I once put in a wishlist request for a "Force Record" option, or maybe I was just thinking about it... the idea would be that if you request a recording that can't be scheduled due to other recordings already scheduled, it would offer to Force the recording at the possible expense of other recordings. The Force Recording logic would then be:

1) Cancel all recordings not yet in progress which overlap the new recording.
2) Schedule the new recording.
3) Reschedule the canceled recordings as possible on the remaining tuners.

sorry, recorded lots of rubbish before it reproduced the error. Even then it is slightly different: "Jamies 30 minute Meals" and "School for Stars" are zero length. All the others appear OK with full padding!

In case there no sign of any problems, but for whatever reason your device failed to lock onto a signal so no data was delivered to NPVR.

School For Stars was the same - the device failed to lock onto the channel.

That's similar to this thread: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...recordings. In that case it seemed consistent to the PCTV tuner (of which I have one and had the same issue). The way I have gotten around was to buy a new tuner, put it at a higher priority and restart the computer after each time that I use the second one! Incidentally, if it wasn't for this situation I would actually solve my current problem by allocating each of my two tuners to channels on a particular frequency.

Regarding the multi-tuner channel association, it looks like I did just hijack this thread (is it possible for them to be separated out?).

From a logic point of view, it would be optimal if, upon the next program starting, the recording service asked "are any of the tuners already recording at this frequency?". I guess pre-padding/post-padding & recording prioritising complicates that!

Or, failing that, is it possible to display which tuner is 'scheduled' (or going to be scheduled using the logic) for a particular show? Or warn ahead of time if there is going to a conflict with padding?

In any event, I do feel sorry for the recording service, it's hard enough for me to keep up with the logic required Tongue

P.s. I really like nPVR, it's certainly the best software of it's type out!

I am so very sorry, I didn't check the obvious in the digital logs before I sent them, just saw the zero length files and the "Recording due to start pre-padding, but tuner not available" message. Now I can't provoke it to fail! I will leave the debug patch in but I can't promise any evidence as I am not the one who usually watches it.

@sub - there's an "more logging" update to NDigitalHost back at post #7 of this thread; does that update make it create one log per tuner? I've had two crashes related to livetv in that past couple of weeks, and in both cases it was on tuner 2 so I had no log of what happened.

Yes, it produces one log per capture source.

Hi, been away for a bit.

I just recreated the problem again after reading the updates to the thread. Logs are attached. Started Mad Men first which records properly. The other 4 recordings start after Mad Men but padding starts before it ends. Of those 4, Love Boat and A farmer's life for me failed, Weatherwatch which is on the same network as Mad Men stops after 2-3minutes, which is actually before the Mad Men recording ended. Home Shopping also stopped early, after 12m.

I tried setting up manual recordings in the same pattern as above with no padding but with the 4 shows starting before the first ends and all 5 recordings were successful.

Currently I've been using a crude work around by setting all the tuners to start recording before the first show I want recorded starts and end recording at the same time after the last show ends. So far this has been working well. Just a lot of added video to cut out.

No idea if this is an issue with my setup but it's fairly consistently reproducible. It didn't happen with previous versions of NPVR/GBPVR though.

Thanks for looking at the logs and helping with this issue!
