What might be required to get this going?

I've heard XBMC can drive PVR functions on MythTV or on MediaPortal. How I have no idea, I've not looked.

But now that things like the ATV2 can run XBMC and the raspberry PII, I'd be curious as to what is required, and if there would be any appetite in the community for it.

It depends on your requirements,

- You can already playback your NextPVR .ts files with comskip and even stream live TV with XBMC with strm files. There are several alternatives that can do this today. I am running XBMC for Android on the XIOS DS and have only limited problems. I have another cheap box that runs XBMC with hardware and it isn't to bad. XBMC is even going to be available on future devices from Sigma (chip maker for the PCH's)

- As whurlston pointed out Ton's great work could be continued into NextPVR and into the current plugin format for XBMC NEWA Web services heavy security continue to be the limiting factor for me,

- There is a chance that the XBMC-PVR fork will one day make the mainstream, I've looked at two options, a) another fork with full support built into XBMC-PVR or b) writing a TVHeadend emulator for NextPVR. Both are pretty straightforward, option b probably easiest.

The disappointing uptake on Ton's work makes me question if this is what NextPVR users want.

The major hurdle with some of the cheaper devices is the audio and video support that you might get with OpenElec on a "real" PC. From the world view true HE-AAC 5:1 is a challenge that I am glad I don't have to deal with.

I expected playback is pretty much sorted

I'd had a quick play with them as well but didn't spend the time to figure out exactly how to do it. I'm assuming based on the Android client that it's doable in things other than DotNet.

Is the xbmc fork to drive a tuner? I'd imagine easier, and potentially more useful from a nextpvr point of view, if a nextpvr backend with xbmc GUIs.

Not even close.

XBMC doesn't use .NET neither did Ton's plugin.

No tuner support is core, at least for HDHR. It is a frontend to a separate backend PVR program some screenshots her http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-on:MythTV_PVR ie http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7167/sc...t001ju.png

I do think this would be great. Ton's great work seemed to be more for linux not windows.

The only thing that makes XBMC stand out to me is you can run it off a flash drive on minimal linux (openelec) & the awsome plug-ins.
Can't really do much about embedded windows without buying an expensive license but i'm thinking some of the plug-ins could be ported over?

I don't know though because i'm not a programmer.

Exactly. Xbmc is fairly cross platform. Raspberrypii is coming along, atv2 is fairly stable, windows, Linux.

Im not (personally) thinking it as a total replacement for nextpvr, but a more open implementation of the client extenders.

Don't get me wrong, If I thought that we could get the Nmt implementation on more decives I would stick with it. I like the 1 look interface. But I'm not sure I see that coming.

So for me the next best optionis to move to an open source, actively developed client, with a fairly active community that could interface with the backend recording system.

The original mvpmc is fully open source and tmrt released a linux client using it. It is stable too, since NextPVR doesn't change much. With modifications you can run it on the R Pii or ATV2 if you really wanted to, probably with less effort writing a plugin and I'd be glad to help anyone like I did with tmrt to get it to run. How more "open" do you want?

The real issue is all devices including the RPii and your beloved ATV2 have too many limitations to really warrant a detailed evaluation as a general NextPVR client that plays all formats. I haven't stopped looking and have bought quite a few just this year hoping for something that will replace low end PC client, and frankly on the "open" market there isn't a clean choice. I will keep looking since my real goal is to find a client that avoids the Windows "tax".
