The Avermedia HD DVR has a hole in their older drivers allowing HDCP recording. The reason I bring this up is that it uses software encoding which may or not be the same on this device.

I had the avermedia one, and it's similar, in that it's software encoding.
Wasn't very nice, produced bad recordings and killed my C2D 2.4 Ghz for anything else. (and still got some stuttering)
(and the avermedia is cheaper that that ($138 NZ)

I thought this device had HW encoding, are you sure it has not?

You mean for the DX one, I'm pretty sure it's software encoding, looking at the Q&A section:
http://club.dx.com/forums/Forums.dx/threadid.987317

or for the Avermedia one, it was software mpeg2 for HD, and h264 for SD. (well, it was before I sold it and got a hauppauge hdpvr)

You'r right. With HD content it may be very heavy for my 3GHz dual core AMD64. But someone mentioned that with ArcSoft's ShowBiz you can encode H.264 using the GPU?

ShowBiz would have to support this as a capture device. If there no encoder on board you probably wouldn't want to store raw video to your hard disk. Also it is possible that this device does h/w encoding, someone just has to take the risk. If it comes with DirectShow drivers allowing you to create a grf and it is a stable device you could even use it with NextPVR via NetworkRecorder+SGraphRecorder

I'v just got confirmation from DealExtreme that this device does not do HW encoding. It may give good results thou, but a bit expensive for me to buy as an experiment.
