I have setup a test channel on my ATI TV 650 using SVideo input. I have audio when viewing live tv and recorded on this first test channel. The video is only a black screen, both when I watch live tv or playback the recording.

When looking at the recorded tv folder, windows does give me a thumbnail of the recording and it is accurate. When I try to play back the .ts file, Windows Media Player crashes.

Also of note, when playing back the recording in nPVR, the OSD only shows the time and never has a playback bar visible (although I know it should be on there from the screenshots of nPVR I have seen).

I have the final RTM version of Windows 8 x64.

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated as I am looking forward to getting nPVR working and ditching Media Center.

Thank you,
Mike

If you see a real thumbnail, then it sounds like it's probably just a playback issue related to the decoders you've got selected on the Settings->Decoders screen. What decoders do you currently have selected for MPEG2 video and MPEG1 Layer II audio?

MPEG2 video: Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder
MPEG1 Audio: Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder
*Sorry, I don't see a Layer II audio
** I only have two options for the video decoder (the other being LAN Video Decoder -- and it produces the same results)

And, thanks so much for the quick help. I really appreciate it.

Those decoders should be fine.

If you try playing the file with a non-directshow player, like VLC, does it play correctly?

Yes - just downloaded VLC. Plays just as expected, thanks.

You'll probably need to try playing the same file in NextPVR, then zip and attach the npvr.log

Also, the recorded file is still just a black screen with accurate audio when playing back through recorded shows on NextPVR.

It does look like the video decoder is failing to hookup. You might need to try finding a different video decoder to try (other than that 'LAN Video Decoder' which I've never heard of).

It could also be related to the video renderer, so may be worth trying something other than EVR.

Thanks sub, but I have no idea how to manipulate the EVR, or enhanced video renderer.

Could installing Shark007 help?

Also, do you think this is an exclusively Win 8 RTM issue?
