I have come back to NextPVR after a couple of years absence from originally using GB-PVR.

I have got caught a couple of times by setting my post-record padding to 5 minutes and the show over running.

I thought NextPVR would automatically adjust the end time based on the data in the (DVB-) stream (it knows what program its recording)

Is that not the case?

Does the listings plugin perhaps do this?

or do I just need to set the post-record padding to (say) 10 minutes?

Thanks

- Dave

I have never heard that the DVB stream contains anything that can be relied on to designate the end of a show. NextPVR uses the time, including post-padding, to decide when to stop recording.

They never update the data in the DVB stream here. My broadcaster always just reports the original schedule. The app would have no way to know it's running late.

This is from the Which? "PVR features explained":-
TV shows don’t always start and finish bang on time. PVRs with the new Freeview+ facility respond to start/stop signals transmitted by the broadcaster and will record the whole programme even if they start early or overrun.

So I don't think the EPG is ever changed but PVRs from Humax and others respond to the actual start and finish times.

There is a caveat with that, however, although the data is potentially in the streams, it's down to the broadcasters to update it in a timely manner.

When I was writing the DVB Radio plugin for GB-PVR I read a pile of technical documentation on digital TV standards and reverse-engineered a lot of streams to analyse the SI (Service Information) tables. I also managed to get access to a document called the "D Book" published by the DTG which is an industry standards publication. A great deal of SI information is optional both in the case of whether broadcasters provide it and whether digital TV equipment acts on it if it's there.

Admittedly, to be able to use the Freeview+ logo, equipment does have to implement mandatory standards and so "should" be able to respond to things like "currently running" flags but, as I said that depends on the accuracy of the SI data. I seem to remember broadcasters were required to make changes to the schedule at least 1 hour ahead of time which meant last minute issues (live broadcast overruns) weren't catered for.

It was, of course, several years ago since I read all this stuff and the DTG will have certainly updated requirements of both the broadcasters and the equipment manufacturers but I remember being surprised at how little of the optional SI data was actually being broadcast at the time.

Cheers,
Brian

I have a feeling my Sky box has failed to record some sports events that overran so I'm fairly sure any start/stop data is not controlled by some bloke or producer in close to realtime.
Certainly in the old VCR days, using the start/stop data (whatever it was called then - ahh PDC -) was almost guaranteed to wreck a recording.

p.s. just been reading a humax forum and it seems to be a bit of a dogs dinner. "accurate recording" needs that data transmitted (of course), however some channels are abysmal at sending it. So you add pre and post padding - which turns off "accurate recording".....

I usually have 5 min pre- and 8 min post padding, that covers 99% of all cases.
