You won't likely find a consensus on the best method of controlling an stb. I use firewire so I can't help about IR. You might have limited you audience by posting this in the XBMC forum.

I'd be interested in any way to control npvr through xbmc. What is the firewire method?

If you have a cable TV box with a firewire port, you should be able to change channels (I don't believe sat boxes have this feature). The NPVR channel changer exe would be set to the firewire channel changer. NPVR then passes the channel number to the external program which sends the command to the STB via firewire. Your NPVR box needs a firewire port, of course and must be running a 32 bit OS as there are no 64 bit firewire drivers. If you are on Win7, you will need to set the firewire device to legacy mode in Device Manager. You can google to find out how to do that.
Read here for more: http://home.comcast.net/~exdeus/stbfirewire/ When you get the firewire drivers installed, you can use sagechanger instead of the channel program; it has a few additional features.

Thanks for the info. I suppose I will have to go another route.

I imagine the USB-UIRT would do what you're looking for.
On the remote side I just purchased a FLIRC, so that I can use IR remotes on my XBMC and it is recommended for the Raspberry Pi.
Hyper visor Host, Windows 10 VM, recording to QNAP NAS, NXTPVR 6.x
