The latest is already installed:
Intel HD Graphics driver version is 9.17.10.2932
DirectX version 11

It's definitely something do with the video card or it's drivers or the DX runtime. Maybe try reinstalling the DirectX 9 runtime.

After extracting the files, did you run dxsetup.exe? Instructions are lacking on the download page, which was one reason I suggested SAF6. [Edit] BTW DirectX end-user runtimes are not the same thing as DirectX11, which is part of your operating system.

As mvallevand recently mentioned, an even newer driver has just been released by Intel (go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchR...amilyId=39 and select Windows 8 64-bit operating system).

I wonder if you have experienced other ntdll.dll errors, and if that was the corrupt file you mentioned earlier?

There might be a remote possibility that this is a Data Execution Prevention issue, particularly if you aren't using the usual default (turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only). but I doubt that very much. Perhaps what you really need is for Microsoft to release SP1 (or I hear they might call it Windows 8.1).

I admire your perseverance and hope it will prove worthwhile in the end!

Correct. NextPVR uses DirectX components that are not part of the DirectX that is shipped with any version of Windows.

You could try running the full DirectX Runtime install from ... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/...quirements

Running the full DirectX Runtime should not downgrade or damage any existing DirectX component on your machine. It should install additional DirectX components that are used by NextPVR.

I loaded the full DirectX per the link and it installed successfully after closing many processes in task manager to make sure DirectX was not in use and giving an install error (MS doesn't tell you this, you just get a "failed installation" message and have to check the logs). I then installed the latest Intel HD Graphics 9.18.10.3071. I uninstalled NPVR completely and re-installed and restarted. Still same error, no start, and the special NPVR.log looks the same as the last.

I appreciate all the help. I'll continue to explore everything again and maybe the suggestions to either re-install Windows or wait for SP1 will be the trick. I'm also going to try it on my old laptop running Windows 7, although the hardware is probably inadequate.

One more update....I just tried turning off DEP for NPVR.exe and got this message: "This program must run with DEP enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program". Go figure.

I also just noticed the standard Windows 8 does not include Windows Media Player and DVD player software. You have to install a third party DVD player or install Windows Media Center for $99. I wonder if this has something to do with my problem - no DVD player or a related software missing? It never occurred to me that I could buy a modern day MS based system and not be able to play a DVD...incredible.

Here is Microsoft's message:
Is Windows Media Center included in my upgrade?
No. If you want to install Windows Media Center, you need to buy the Windows 8 Media Center Pack after you upgrade to Windows 8. For more info, see the Add features webpage.

Will I be able to play DVDs after upgrading?
If you already have third-party DVD playback software, Upgrade Assistant helps determine if this software is compatible with Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows 7, you'll have the option to keep this software during the upgrade to Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll need to reinstall it.

If you don't have a third-party app that plays DVDs, or if you currently rely on Windows Media Player for DVD playback, you'll need to download and install a third-party app or install Windows Media Center to play DVDs. For more info, see the Add features webpage.

The only commonly reported issue with Windows 8 is a lack of built in support for playing MPEG2 files. The Microsoft decoders in W7 play MPEG2. The Microsoft decoders in (off the shelf) W8 do not play MPEG2. Your problem is almost certainly not due specifically to W8 because others are running NextPVR in W8 without issues.

You've got me wondering if DEP might actually be the problem. Before my last post I searched the forum for "data execution prevention," "execute disable bit" and various acronyms, but came up with nothing. I remain skeptical, but you might try changing the setting so that DEP is only turned on for essential Windows programs, if possible. This wouldn't be nearly as risky as e.g. having Java enabled on your browser while browsing (very scary). Unfortunately I'm running a 5-year-old Intel processor under Vista, so my implementation of this feature is probably different.

If you were able to open NPVR, then decoders would be next on your agenda as Graham mentioned; but lack of suitable decoders is not why the application won't run at all.

The default setting for DEP is turn on for essential Windows programs only. When I try to change the setting to all programs except those selected, and then pick NPVR.exe, I get the message that I can't turn it off for this program. Kind of contradictory.
