Hi sub, I'd like to request an option which means padding is considered part of the recording, it then wouldn't be possible to shedule shows if a tunner isn't free to honour the padding. There are at least 4 people who would like this option, hopefully it is something that you could consider. Thank you.

I would like this if it was in the form of the hard padding and soft padding options proposed by johnsonx42. Most of the time my padding is of the "this would be nice, but no biggie" padding, but sometimes it is fairly essential, like live programming (particularly sports) or programs that come on AFTER live programming, which means they might be delayed. Yes, I know a manual recording can be set for this sort of thing, but it just isn't the same.

I imagine it would have to be a global on or off option, so you wouldn't be able to specify per recording whether padding was essential or not. That would suit my needs but I could be wrong.

What I wanted when I've proposed this in the past is for the automatic padding set in Settings->Recordings->Default padding to be "soft" padding, as in "we're going to record an extra minute with every recording when possible". However all padding explicitly requested by the user when setting a recording should be considered "hard" padding, meaning it's part of the recording.

I still remember the fury I felt the first time I tried to use padding on a live program that I expected to run long. I setup a single recording, added 30 minutes of post padding, and expected the recording would in fact run the extra 30 minutes. Instead of the extra 30 minutes though, it stopped recording the live program in order to record a re-run of The Simpsons that I could not have cared less about. I think I actually shouted at the box "why the hell do you think I specifically asked for 30 extra minutes on that specific recording!?!?!?!? did it really seem like it was just a %$($# suggestion?!?!?!?!" or something like that. Perhaps I am being overly dramatic.

edit: ah yes, here's my original complaint after that experience: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...ot-honored

What if you could change the actual start & stop time of a scheduled recording? So, instead of a "hard" padding of thirty minutes, you would change the end time to be 30 minutes later. From the user's perspective, it would be the same, but I wonder if it would be easier to implement. Sub would have to add some UI, as would other skin developers, but there would be no need to keep track of hard vs soft padding.
