Hi all,

I have been tinkering around trying to get NPVR to work on my Windows 8 computer with HDHomeRun Prime for the past couple months with no success. I've got Windows 8 Pro x64 w/ Windows Media Center (which works great with live TV in WMC). However, I can't get NPVR to give me anything other than a black screen when I switch to live TV. I've tried allowing all programs in C:/program files/npvr through Windows firewall, tried disabling the firewall, installed the R2 patches, installed DirectX 9.0c runtimes and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 runtimes, used all number of combinations of decoders, and even tried uninstalling/disabling WMC as I've heard it can cause issues with NPVR. I tried all of this on a Windows 7 x64 laptop that I have using EVR renderer, PDVD12 for both video decodings, and LAV audio for all audio decoding and everything worked great. Any help would sincerely be appreciated.

Log folder attached.

Thanks!

If you do a recording, do you end up with a file wit a realistic size, that can be played in another player?

With recordings all I get left with is a zero byte file. Same thing with the live TV buffer file.

Assuming 192.168.81.1 is your machine's IP address, then it looks like it's firewall related. It looks like NextPVR isn't receiving any data from your Prime.

Hmm...that seems strange, considering I tried disabling the Windows firewall and allowing all programs through...I don't have any other firewalls or even antivirus software on the computer, so I'm not sure what could be blocking it. Is there maybe some extra level of security in Windows 8 that could be blocking?

Try temporarily disabling the firewall.

I tried disabling the firewall and windows defender last night, but I still can't get anything through to NPVR. I'm thinking it has something to do with Windows 8 and/or WMC, but I'm not quite sure...it seems like others have had success using it on Windows 8, though...

I am having the exact same issue. Firewall turned off, and live tv works fine for for HDhomerun quick tv, but just get black screen on live tv in nextpvr. Nextpvr recognized all the channels from the hdhomerun as well. This is on a brand new build of Windows 8 as well. I have tried different decoders to no avail. Have you found out any more information on this?

ISTR that other W8 users have had more success when they add specific firewall exceptions for NextPVR.exe, NRecord.exe and NDigitalHost.exe. Maybe try that...

Hi thedman, if you can get a recording larger than 0 bytes but just can't watch it (or live TV), then decoders are the problem. Windows 8 decoders for MPEG2 video and AC3 audio (the usual formats for U.S. digital channels) will not support third-party applications such as NPVR. One solution would be to install SAF6 (http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?50227).

But if recordings result in 0-byte files as nomoreheroes7 reported, then no data is reaching NPVR. BTW is your HDHomeRun a Prime, and if so, do you have a cable card?
