And it's intermittent .. Doesn't seem to make any difference if I have all five tuners in use or just one of the HDHR dual tuners. My first guess would be that I have an intermittent problem with that coaxial line. Maybe that feed is marginal? But can anyone tell me what the "ERROR: invalid virtual channel" means? During the coarse of a recording session that tuner sometimes works and other times gives me that error.

Rich, Those "Executing ... /vhcannel..." messages look to me like you still have the HDHR dual configured in NPVR using the "HDHR" Type instead of the "QAM" Type one. (See Johnson's message above.)

If you manage to catch it when it's happened, then maybe runt he HDHomeRun configuration utility to see what channel number it's tuned to, and if it reports a signal lock.

Well by copy-protected do you mean encrypted? Yes they are .. and here is where it gets really really strange. I "thought" I was recording clear qam channels with the HDHR Dual and encrypted channels with the HDHR Prime. While troubleshooting this for kicks I set up a schedule of recordings .. Five channels .. ALL encrypted .. None of them Clear QAM. All at the same time. All five tuners were in use and the recordings were perfect. How the heck can the two tuners in the HDHR dual decrypt those encrypted channels ?? I have to check this again.
But as to the problem with the error messages, I confirmed that they are indeed only intermittent. Sometimes I have as many as five tuners in play at the same hour and the recordings are all fine. All those channels shown in my example with errors also record just fine most of the time. If it were a configuration problem then shouldn't it crop up all the time? Also, to check this further, I ran the Silicon Dust set up for those tuners (the HDHR Dual) and was able to use the SD Quick TV application to view ALL the encrypted channels. It's almost as if the Silicon Dust Fairy sprinkled some magic on my HDHR Dual and tuned it into a 2 channel HDHR Prime. Also I wonder why the SD Setup properly identifies the HDHR Dual as a HDHR Dual but NextPvr says it's a PRIME ??? I'm going to run a test tonight with all five tuners again, and let it record five encrypted channels all at the same time. I SHOULD get some kind of error about there not being any more tuners available because the "dual" tuner isn't supposed to be decoding encrypted channels. Either that or Cox cable is now sending EVERYTHING in clear QAM.

It seems that you could set up your encrypted channels only on the Prime tuner(s), and clear channels on both the Prime and Homerun. NPVR should then not try to record the encrypted on the Homerun.
I dont know how the SiliconDust tuners work, but with the tuners I am familiar with, for clear QAM, NPVR can record every program stream on a physical channel. On my cable system, local PBS and NBC are on the same physical channel (frequency) 106. There are 5 programs streams on this channel: PBS and NBC HD, 2 PBS SD, and one NBC SD. The PBS SD are Create and Spanish. NPVR could record all 5 of these streams on one clear QAM tuner. Your cable could have multiple encrypted "channels" on the same frequency. If the Prime with cablecard can handle it, NPVR could record all of them at the same time. Maybe the other cablecard users could weigh in. I don't know if this info helps, but it sounds like it might.

Unless something has changed from the initial support for CableCard tuners in NPVR (and I'm quite sure that it hasn't because I haven't seen any mention of such a change), the "HDHR" tuner type doesn't support the multi-recording mikeh49 describes. Now, if the HDHR Dual is enabled and configured in NPVR using the "QAM" tuner type, then for the clear QAM physical channels, NPVR would be able to use 1 tuner to record multiple program channels that the cable company sends on the same physical channel as mikeh49 describes.

Oh oh .. My bad guys .. It IS working normally .. that is the Prime is recording both the clear QAM and encrypted and the HDHR Dual is ONLY recording clear QAM.
I just reran a test of this. My error was that the NPVR software doesn't give me an error at all. It says it's recording the five channels. When I check the tray ICON for the NPVR status it properly shows the three tuners on the Prime as recording and the two tuners on the Dual as also recording. While it's recording there are no error shown and all looks normal. The Npvr Recordings GUI shows all 5 channels as being recorded with no errors. BUT when the recordings end the HDHR Dual recorded channels have no content .. just a black screen. No error or any failed recording . I don't know if I found a bug or what .. I would think that if Npvr tried to record an encrypted channel using a clear QAM only tuner, that I would have seen some notice about no more available tuners or something? I think I have a handle on what is happening now. Those errors are happening when ever the HDHR Dual records an encrypted channel. The errors show up in the log but don't stop the Npvr application from continuing to record. Because the channel is encrypted the HDHR Dual cannot decode it. This results in a recording that is just a black screen. While testing I never let any recording end. I just canceled them all. I "think" if I let the recording continue normally and end normally I might have seen the "no data found" error. But by just canceling the recording early there were no errors and the result was a black screen. I've played with the priority settings for the various tuners but I can't "force" the HDHR Dual to ONLY record the clear QAM channels. I have to check my channel recording setup and see if I can force those clear QAM channels to ONLY be used by the HDHR Dual. I'll be back ..

Rich, Go into the settings of NPVR and make sure that for the HDHR Dual tuners, you have only the "QAM" instances enabled and the "ATSC" and "Prime" instances are disabled. Then go into the channels listing for the QAM instances and make sure that only the clear QAM (unencrypted) channels are enabled. Then NPVR will only try to use those tuners for the unencrypted channels and will use your Prime tuners for the encrypted channels.
