hdhomerun recording cutting out

i've been seeing this issue for months now, but i haven't been able to figure out how to reliably reproduce it. happens to like 50% of recordings for me now... basically, the recording starts ok, and then partway through just stops saving any additional data to the .ts file. NPVR still shows it as recording, and sometimes it will cut back in (much) later. i checked the hdhomerun config program and it shows tuner has signal lock, leased to the right ip, and full signal quality. the hard drive has plenty of free space, too. i found nothing at all noted in the logs (attached). what could be going wrong? this is getting really frustrating. for the last recording in the log, it stopped saving at around 01:48:00 and resumed at around 03:35:00.

I have had similar issues where the signal from HDHomerun would hang and then just restart after a while. I found no info with this behavior via my many web searches. I was, however, able to isolate the issue with my setup. It may have some relevance to yours, that is why I am sharing.

In my setup I am using XBMC as a front end and I have several VM (virtual machines) that do different task in my media center. Setting up my HTPC I tried different types of software to do PVR, play media, etc... I had enable multiple services on different system that accessed the hdhomerun. The one that was causing me the issue was the drivers for hdhomerun on the XMBC HTPC, but it could have been any of the systems where HDHomerun drivers were enabled.

Basically if another device was trying to access one of the two tuners available on the HDHomerun, you ran the chance of stoppage on the HDHomerun channel. Note that watching Live TV while recording is another possible conflict with the available 2 tuners.

The fix for me was to control what accesses the HDHomerun tuners and when. Since I was using NextPVR for my PVR duties, I disabled the HDHomerun drivers on the XBMC box which I had enabled to test TVHeadends. No more freezing issues since I did that.

hmm, i wonder if some sort of interference like that is the issue. i have 2 hdhomeruns on my network, and two computers with npvr on them - each computer is supposed to talk to a single hdhomerun, but i wonder if something is getting confused and talking to the other one.

HDHomeRun Setup -> Advanced tab:

Disable "Dynamic Tuner Allocation"
Uncheck "Windows Media Center Background channel scan" (or something to that effect) if you have the tuners configured in Media Center as well.

had something similar happen again today. had 2 concurrent recordings going off a multi-record from a single tuner. strangely one of the recordings worked 100% with all data and the other recording only has 5:32 of data. maybe it has to do with a different recording that was happening on a different tuner while these two new ones were starting? at least, in the log i found this line that looks suspicious:

What's the filesize on the 5:32 recording?

In HDHomeRun Setup, is your application set to NextPVR? If so, try setting it to "Other ATSC/QAM".

I'd check two file sizes, it looks like two recordingings were scheduled for it.

NFL Preseason Football_20130829_19002200.ts was 614,940kb, and NFL Preseason Football_20130829_19002200-0.ts was 20,021,822kb. they have the same name but it was two different games which aired at the same time on different channels.

the hdhomerun setup did have application set to NextPVR. i changed it to other atsc/qam now. what's the difference?
