Playback stops intermittently when in timeshift mode

I am in the UK. I use bbc iplayer and the itv equivalent which run nicely on XBMC via an add-on - also from abroad via a proxy server. This is what I mean by catch-up TV. Channel 4 used to work too, but they changed something or other and the enthusiast who wrote the add-on says it can't be fixed. Since the PCH runs linux I suppose it could in principle run iplayer, but this would be way beyond my skills
