I have NextPVR create the external file always just in case using the SeparateTimingInfo DWORD 1 registry setting.

Some of the other PVR programs do this differently WTV has meta data in the format some remux during reoording or playback. When I used to use MythTV files were elementary streams in a proprietary format and it was a nuisance playting these files without Myth

I've always been quite happy with Microsoft dtv-dvd. You can also try hoborg's SAF6, but make sure you pm him for the unlocked version.

I'm with the MS DTV-DVD video decoder as well, and skipping seems OK to me. It is dependent on the file quality however. If the cableco has glitches in the stream, playback and skipping will not be good. If this happens, I try to schedule another recording. I don't watch much live TV, so I have limited experience skipping there. In-progress recordings seem to skip OK. Also, note Win 7 and EVR renderer. I think 7 is the most reliable PVR OS.

Many folks like the Cyberlink decoder that comes with hoborg's SAF6. That is the only codec "pack" that I would recommend.
