HD Homerun Prime, not seeing all my channels.

I have my cable card and tuning assistant up and running. I can see some of my channels but not all. Charter said that everything is working right... and with anything HD I feel like I am in over my head. Any one have any pointers?

But isn't the point of the cable card to allow me to see all of the channels in my package? I can get all those channels with not cable card on my 2250. If that is the case, then a cable card is worthless to me. I can get WAY more channels through my 2250 at this point.

My understanding from reading and from asking at Charter that the cable card opens me up to every channel available on my set top box.

And can you clarify viewing the others in win Media Center? I want to use nPVR and not WMC.

With a cablecard and Windows Media Center, you should be able to view any channels in your package.

Unfortunately, the answer is not so straight forward when it comes to any other software. The cable company can mark the channels as "copy-freely", "copy-once" or "copy-never". Other applications (like NextPVR, MediaPortal etc) can only watch/record copy-freely channel. The copy-once/copy-never channels are protected by DRM, and not accessible.

Which channels are marked as copy-freely vs copy-once/copy-never varies a lot between cable operators. Some cable companies have pretty much all channels marked as copy-freely, with only a few premium channels (HBO etc) marked as copy-once/never. Some cable companies are a lot more painful and have virtually everything (other than locals) marked as copy-once/copy-never.

Yes SD and analog was a much simpler world. If you're on the right cable operator though, cablecard can be pretty awesome.

Most of mine are copy-once, so i only get 11 channels out of 200+ with my HD HomeRun Dual. The others I get with a couple of HD-PVRs and STBs. I'd advise a complaint with the FCC about the needless DRM that is only used to lock you into a cable provider's PVR/Cable boxes. It's needlessly excessive. The more of us who complain, the better. You can file your complaint on-line. I did, and it got to my cable provider who called me specifically about my complaint - they take this stuff somewhat seriously.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the input. According to Charter, there is still an issue with my Cable Card, and they are sending a technician out tomorrow to resolve the issue. They claim I should be able to tune any channel in my lineup that I subscribe too... we shall see.

Charter Tech showed up today, and prefaced my appointment with "I have no spare cards with me, or in the warehouse and the last cable card install I went through 9 cards." I didn't foresee it going well.

I had done a fair amount of reading so I knew it would be no easy task to get the Cable Card portion up and running. He called the special number for Charter Techs, told them what was going and he apparently got someone who knew what they what they were doing. They immediately saw an issue, and put the devices on my account in the "correct order". Apparently the cable card has to the be the last device in the list or it will not authenticate properly with Charters Cable Card system. Being an IT guy, I wanted to call BS! However, the tech updated my account and said hold on while I test it. They tested it, had me scan for channels and I now can tune/record EVERY single channel that I get on my HD box in the other room!

Needless to say, I was shocked and surprised!

Now I am also thinking of getting a second HD Prime and Cable Card and dropping my HD box altogether...
