You may want to look at the NDroid or NDroidTE utility.....it may give you more direct viewing.....but it is using native NPVR transcoding not VLC.

I'm familiar with nDroid. I believe the developer is bgowland. I've been conversing with him in this thread. The gist of what I've got so far is that he's uncertain as to why nDroid can't transcode live TV (it can only stream it un-transcoded). He notes that nDroid uses ffmpeg that comes with NextPVR, that ffmpeg is obsolete, and that "someone is going to need to take the effort to come up with good transcoding command line options and most users don't bother to tune it for their broadcast streams."
I wonder if it's possible for him to use VLC instead of ffmpeg.
